According to Amazon, you could get a PAN to bake a Texas-shaped cake for about $50. Or about $20 for a silicone mold. But given the size (about 11" square), I don't think only one of them would server no 50 guests. And if they expect Texas-sized servings, you'd probably need to bake 4 or 5 of 'em.
Less than 150 posts to go before this thread hits 3000 posts.
Here's the link. You might also include my comment about how many she'll need to bake, to feed 50 (especially if they have Texas-sized appetites). The upside is that she'll be able to do it in multiple flavors.
Hmm. Now if they also offered an Alaska-shaped cake pan, would it then be ideal for a baked Alaska?

BAKER hands CUSTOMER one or more box mixes and one-pound boxes of powdered sugar, a carton of eggs, one or more sticks of butter, and a bottle of Canola oil.
BAKER: Here's what I can give you for that price. Some assembly required.

James, come to the drive by with the rest of us, so winniemog can shout your great line........
"SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED ha ha ha ha ha" .
AI can just see how this drive by is going to go down.....
"Yes officer, I know it looks like we were littering from a vehicle/using offensive language in a public place/(insert other various crimes here), but we were just delivering a cake!"
AI forgot to say....
Cue giggling from chocolate-smeared faces of potato chip-eating gallery at this point.....

All Aboard!! Who knew that we were capable of imagining such silliness, in response to "things NOT to ask/say to a baker"
which reminds me:
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail; a great friend will be sitting in jail right beside you.
AI think we might need a bigger vehicle to accommodate everyone....
Or maybe we could just cut to the chase and get us one of those buses they transport prisoners in.....
Could we have piping bags at the ready at the windows, ready to spray everyone with SMBC? I suggest a 1M tip, that way we should get a good coverage!
"OK I'm tough. I can take it. What did she say about my cupcakes????"
You're going to be surprised at the insult on this one. An old co-worker who is still friends with my friend (I know you gals understand that one) is an unpleasant person by nature has a habit of insulting everyone and everything.
My friend visited and told me of the OC-W having a terrible personal tragedy. I said that I still had a box of 6 cupcakes in the freezer, why not take them over to the house for her. Even if she doesn't touch them, some of her company might enjoy them. Later I asked my friend to give it to me straight and tell me what the insult on this one was.
"They were to rich."
I laughed out loud. "That's the best insult she can think of - that they were too RICH?"
"Yes."
"Well, I guess I'm getting better then!"
mb-- yes those types are out there and they know how to bitche -- you deserve a medal for putting yourself out there and being sweet knowing what you already knew would happen -- besides, cupcakes that are 'too rich' are my favorites ♥
reminds me of the time i heard two girls from another department at work soundly trashing a dish they had at the company pot luck -- them not realizing the person that made it was me --

That is a cracker idea. And the award for the most appropriate use of a shortening-based frosting in a drive by goes to......(insert drum roll here).......Goreti!
AI cater as well as bake and get that all the time! Often they don't even bother to ASK, just say "Oh, I want to get that recipe from you!" No problem. I've spent years working on and perfecting my recipes for my business but sure, here ya go! Not.
I just heard the funniest thing!
The Steve Harvey show called a cake decorator and accused her of delivering the wrong cake. What follows is a woman who handles herself and her business
beautifully. By the end, you will admire her composure, business savvy, and ability to know when enough is enough...
it has strong language, so I'm not going to post it here. You only have to search, "nephew tommy prank call the cake lady" and it will come up.
youll be glad you did.
Ellavanilla thanks for sharing that little gem. That cake shop owner is one strong woman
Strong Language was warranted and power to her. (Roy D. Mercer pranks come to mind.)
AThat lady was brilliant. She reminded me of my grandmother until she let the curse words fly...
My favourite part was when she referred to her preacher and cussed out her girlfriend in the same sentence.
And I do live in fear that I will have forgotten an order....there's nothing worse than cake nightmares, when you wake up in the middle of the night, certain you've forgotten something....
'course on the other hand, you could log that under "What not to say to a customer." ..... lol ..... and just hang up the phone.
I had a client last week that wanted a cake shaped like a UPS Freight truck because her husband had just graduated the class to drive an 18 wheeler for the company. She wanted a cake to serve 15-20 people. She asked me for a quote, and since she has been a long term customer, I quoted the price range from when I first started my business because that is what she has always been charged with me. I told her it would be $50-$65 and asked her to send a pic so I could finalize the price. She sent it and told me that she only wanted to pay $50. I said that I would see what I could do but by that point, I was starting to get really annoyed that she was telling me what price I was going to charge for the cake when I was already giving her and extreme discount as it was. I told her I would see what I could do and she said as long as it was the truck with the UPS logo she didn't care.
I decided to make a truck flat on the board instead of standing up. I normally do really detailed and awesome cakes for her because, in the beginning, I didn't have an impressive portfolio and I went into a lot more detail than I was getting paid for because I wanted to build up a good portfolio, Now, I actually work for a custom cakery and I do custom and awesome work on a daily basis. I have told her repeatedly that she gets huge price cuts from me but she seemed not to really listen when I said that.
Well, I delivered the cake. She gave it one of those long, hard stares that anyone who has worked in a grocery store bakery will recognize immediately as the "this isn't what I wanted at all and I am going to complain" look. I told her that I did it flat because of her budget constraints. She gave me the $50 and I left. Then she called me literally 2 minutes later, crying. She said she was very unhappy with the cake. I asked her what was wrong with it and she said that she wanted the cake standing up and that it wasnt my best work. I told her again that she wanted to pay the lowest of my quotes and that she just wanted a "truck with the logo". She said if she had know it would be laying down she would have paid me the $65. That got me really pissed. So she had the money and just didn't think my time, effort and FREE delivery was worth it. She said she would deal with it but was upset and hung up. Then she went on Facebook taking about how she wasn't going to let me ruin her husbands special night. Oh really?... Well honey, I think I'm done doing cakes practically free for you.

cakes create an illusion and an ambiance for a celebration right -- the detail of the illusion being determined by the dollar amount charged/paid of course -- for fifty bucks i would have done an 1/8 sheet cake with a flat picture of a truck -- but my minimum order was way over that so actually that would not have happened --
too bad it came to some negativity -- but as far as getting what she paid for yes i guess should have cost more imo -- but it's a tricky thing to down grade a customer -- where you used to do so much more for her for not enough money --
if you have any other customers like that you might want to contact them and let them know how much you appreciated their business as you built up your skills and portfolio and offer a nice coupon while explaining/reinforcing your new pricing --
best to you
