Whenever I make a fondant cake, I always get asked if the fondant is edible. It gets annoying.
It is in New York, but not in Alaska...........
This isn't really a gripe, more just a cute question I was asked by a groom about his upcoming wedding cake. He wondered if the cake were to have tiers with alternating flavours (chocolate, vanilla, chocolate, vanilla) if it would just look weird. Bless his little cottons... Reassured him that with the same colour fondant covering the whole cake he could have whatever flavours he wanted in there - so cute! :)
She then proceeded to email THE most difficult Alice in Wonderland cakes imaginable. All gumpaste figures, teapot pouring tea.....really over the top. She needed it for Feb 1. Ha ha.
I just giggled when I saw this one. And she must have an account with the email service because her picture was included. I'm thinking she models hand cream......
Sooo, because you will be taking pictures with the cake somehow there was a discount in order? That's the only reason I can think of that she would insert that part.
Luckily I'm on maternity leave right now so it was VERY easy to turn this order down :)

Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!!!!!! Yes, we always have stuff lying around that we want to just get rid of for free!!!! And I'm sure the grocery store will be happy to give away free cupcakes! All you have to do is ask!

AWe are having a Mother's Expo in our area in a month. Lots of vendors and shopping. I was asked if I wanted a booth and the cost is $30. I said I would get back to her. She pmed me on Facebook, and said that she had a proposition for me: trade the $30 booth fee for cake. Ok, sounds like something I may consider...I ask her what she had in mind, and she said 3 full sheet cakes or enough to feed 150 people!!! Ummmmm...no! For $30 I was thinking a very small cake and that is still cheap for me to do it. She would have to give me the space and pay me a significant amount on top of that for such a large amount of cake. I told her that it wasn't doable so she let me know she would find someone else. I told her that was fine with me. ;)

Clearly someone who has absolutely no idea about ingredient costs and labor. You can try educating her; or wait until a "cheap cake lady" agrees because it's such a great deal!

... I feel sorry for that baker because he or she will definitely be getting the bad end of that deal.
I no longer feel sorry for that type of baker. I've been on CC for several years now and have seen posts by numerous "ignorant" members. I can guarantee that many folks (members and lurkers) truly believe it is a great deal. And they will fight anyone who tells them otherwise.

Got an email from a girl who wants a cake for her granddad's birthday party - so I go back and ask the usual, portions flavour etc She would like A cake for 20 people, fruit cake for the oldies and something chocolate for the young people... Er.... Right...

I've been asked for this sort of thing quite often. I usually just do a little 5" and 7" two tier cake for requests like this.

ALmbo this is soo me. I hate eating icing but i think it so rude to scrape it off. Smh i guess i wont be saying that anymore. Lol
I'm not exactly partial to heavy coats of frosting, myself. And I do prefer a dense, hand-blended BC to any kind of whipped frosting.
AI am currently on a committee for a large gala dinner. I usually bring in samples of cupcakes/etc if I have anything left from weekend orders, which everyone loves and also ensures my husband doesn't end up with diabetes from eating.
So at the end of the meeting,while I'm in conversation with other people,this girl next to me turns around and asks me point blank:
"So what do you charge?"
I was flabbergasted. Here's how this went:
Me: Well it depends, what are you looking for?
Her: Anything.
Me: It's hard to tell without knowing what you want. Cake, cupcakes, brownies...?
Her: Just anything,like a ballpark figure.
Me: Honestly, if I don't know what you want, I can't quote you a price. It's based on flavor,size, frosting.
(After a minute of silence)
Her: Do you do a lot of weddings?
Me: I don't really have the space for wedding cakes right now, mostly party cakes.
Her: You should really get into weddings. That's where the money is.

I am a new hobby baker, so I don't very often have cupboards full of ingredients, I tend to just buy them in as and when I need them.
Last Saturday at 22.30pm I got an email from a family member that just said, 'can you do a cake for my sons 21st? It's on Monday'!!
She ended up going to the supermarket and getting one of those you have the picture printed on....

Welcome to the world of bakers where all cakes for friends and family are of course "fast and free"! It's unfortunate, but they will continue to do this unless you firmly explain why it's not feasible. Key word is firmly!
