AWell, if I can't scrape together the ingredients for an 8x8 batch of my "Innsbruck Dream Bars," I've got 2/3 of a DH white cake mix in the cupboard. Never was big on pie.

i make one apple pie a year and the time is now-- yes!

we never have cake for thanksgiving or christmas--

we only have cake for birthdays, graduations and weddings--and a birthday cake could be anything from a 'this is your life' topsy turvy rock your world cake to a 9x13 in the glass pan with a tapered candle hovered over while we sing -- ha!

What? You mean you don't just shove it in the cake like Sandra Lee taught the world to do? 8O:D

Which is why I utterly cannot begin to understand why the once-common plastic "flower" birthday candle holders are now virtually impossible to find.

AI had an order for caramel cupcakes but then the customer contacted me to cancel because she talked to her in laws and they were not "into" cupcakes. They wanted a pumpkin pie from Costco. I told her I'd be upset too if there were no pie at Thanksgiving!

AActually, I've seen them online, too. They're just "damn near impossible to find" locally.

And "MBalaska," didn't Cheech & Chong have a bit about a kid shoving things up his nose? Never heard Cheech & Chong do it themselves (but I see there are several versions online), but I knew a kid in about 7th or 8th grade who did Cheech & Chong impressions (yes, BOTH of them at the same time).

AToo late to edit: Based on the ones I've seen online (carded with a bunch of regular-size birthday candles, for a fraction of what's being asked at Etsy or eBay), either somebody's got a huge cache of NOS in a warehouse, or somebody bought the tooling to make them.

That cake was so impressive I did some research online.  It was made by Jason Reaves of Market Salamander in Virginia.  Their wedding cakes start at $6 a serving, so how much do you think that huge, artistic & architecturally sound Eye of Sauron cake masterpiece cost?

sbrehill~~I'm fascinated that you actually quoted a price for that cake.  I would've collapsed on the floor in fits of hysterical giggles.  Welcome to the forum!  [LOVED your alligator "bride" groom's cake!]

Customer: We'll what can you do for me?

Staff: Would you like me to tell you what's available or would you like to come in and choose something from the cabinet?

Customer: I don't want one that's already there, what can you bake fresh for this afternoon?

Staff: I'm sorry our baking staff have gone home for the day and won't be back until Monday because we are closed tomorrow, I can tell you what we have available for this afternoon.

Customer: So you can't help me then. Customer hangs up.

Staff: If you want a cake that is so damn fresh and less than 3 hours old BAKE IT YOURSELF.

Todays PITA .....

I get a call about 2PM today from a customer that had called for a quote 3 weeks ago. She wants a fondant covered cake with zebra stripes and fondant baby booties plus 24 cupcakes. I tell her no problem and work up a new quote since I threw out the other one after not hearing from her after 2 weeks. As I am working up the order I ask her when is it needed? SATURDAY... This is Wednesday afternoon. Normally I would just grin and bear it except that 1. we are due to have a huge ice storm starting tomorrow and 2. I know I told her I needed at least a weeks notice for planning

AMine is (from a family member who wants a free cake):

It's just a cake! It doesn't take that long to make one, right? What do you need a box of cake and a couple cans of frosting? I'll buy it for you! Uggggh Ugggg!!¡!!!!

AAlso, I love how customers want a large cake to feed just a few people. I had a lady who wanted a 4tired cake to feed 30-40 people. She said I could use cake dummies for the cake not needed to get the size. So, I quoted her rather cheaply for A 4 tier cake but still high enough to make some profit for the hours put into it. She emailed me back saying that price was too much, it would be $___ per person. Well, if I take the $3.00 a slice she would want and times it by 40 people it would only be $120 for a 4 tier wedding cake! I don't care if it is half fake cake...I still have to decorate the thing! That's just crazy!!!

that feeds 20, oh, and 10 servings need to be sugar free. I would like multiple tiers, at least 3 tiers.  Gold leaf on one of the tiers, rhinestones around the base of each tier, fondant swags from one tier to the next, a rhinestone monogram on the cake and a rhinestone 25 on another of the tiers, about 3-4 flowers with rhinestone centers at the stopping point of each swag and a mound of rhinestone centered flowers on the top.

I make cakes for fun and I never charge. I'm making a three tier cake for a reception. My friend wanted a big fancy cake so its going to be larger than it needs to be, and she wanted vanilla cake with lemon filling and buttercream. Just yesterday a mutual friend asked about the flavor then turned his nose up and said "Oh, I don't really like lemon can't you do a berry filling instead and cover it with the fondant stuff you make"? and he was dead serious!

Oh sure. It's my wedding gift to them, but  I'll switch it up to suit you and let the newlyweds know that I decided to make their cake to suit your preferences instead so you wouldn't skip dessert when the time came.

Well, I don't like lemon, either, but I wouldn't do anything that gauche. Maybe eat around the filling. Then again, the only wedding cake I've ever spec'd out is in a work of fiction, baked and decorated by the bride's family and friends in the church kitchen, and served for a reception in the church's parish hall, and has each tier a different flavor. And since she's an organist, and he's a trumpeter, the topper has the bride sitting at a positive organ, and the groom playing a trumpet (a valved "herald" trumpet), and the overall decorating theme is musical, with notes on staves, and little plaques with a trumpet and a rank of pipes.
