I had one ask me can you please make my icing buttercream like the grocery store? My response..... If you want grocery store buttercream go to the grocery store! The look on her face priceless!
Haha, I was just browsing my local Craigslist to see what kind of cheap cake ladies there around here and stumbled across this gem
http://houston.craigslist.org/wan/3878822040.html
...at least they ask for their Sunday cake on Tuesday that has to count for something!! lol
The history teacher in me made me search for more info on the "egg controversy" and found this snopes articles, pointing out the above is "true .... but not." It was not so much the feeling that a baker was adding something of her own, but the fact that adding fresh eggs just made a better cake.

The very last paragraph is interesting, in a social history point of view.
That last paragraph makes me want to quit my job and be a stay at home mom...even though I'm not married or have any kids!

That feeling changes really fast when you realize that being at home with a little kid all day isn't as much fun as you think. Everyone I know (including myself) who did that for any length of time either gets some kind of a work situation going just to get some intellectual stimulation or to get a break from the incessant demands to read the same book over and over again, and the "mama...mama...mama...mama...mama...mama..."
Can you do it any cheaper? "yeah sure not a problem how does free suit you" lol
Not like we have rent to pay or kids to feed were magic bakers lol

I went to school in the 80s and 90s and learnt how to bake from scratch in Home Ec class, and from my grandmother. My own mother was at home, but she couldn't make toast without burning it.
And yes being a stay at home mom might seem like fun (and for the most part, it can be), but you would be amazed at how many of us end up on some form of medication...
I grow tired of orders like.... "I would like red and green on the cake, do whatever you like." or "Make it camo do whatever." Then they come back and say.... "That's a nice cake....but that isn't at all what I wanted." or they flip out about how it is totally wrong with a sour face. I'm not a mind reader. I need more detail of what you would like, instead of saying do whatever you think is best. :/

I didn't get to take any home ec classes in school...I started high school in the budget cut era...blah. My mom baked cakes but she HATED it...she doesn't get why I like it so much. On the flip side, she understands what goes into making a cake!

Well that is true...what about a stay at home mom without any kids? LOL...that way I can bake in peace!

I had a standard line for these folks. With my gramma-smile on my face and in a somewhat sing-song voice, I'd tell the non-decision makers, "Oh good!! I get to do whatever I want and you don't get to complain about it!" That usually make them laugh and they began to be a little more helpful.

I "got to" take Home Ec, but the teacher was such a nitwit that I would go home and tell my mom, "Mrs. W_____ told us to do this, but it doesn't make any sense." and my mom would say "Here, let me show you how it should be done." God bless my wonderful and talented mom.
AA couple of weeks ago, I received a cake order over the phone after the lady saw my work on facebook. 1.5kg vanilla cake for the daughter's 21st birthday to be delivered friday afternoon at her office. Come friday afternoon and my delivery guy gets there at 4pm, after we had confirmed with her that due to many deliveries, we'd get there around 4. At exactly 4.10, I received a text message to the effect that because f our late delivery, check has cancelled the order and has since ordered from her local supermarket. I try calling her number but she doesn't pick up...! Meanwhile, the delivery guy gets there at 4.15 and finds her all fuming and stating that the order is cancelled. he tries to reason with her to no avail, so I decide to offer her the cake for free, afterall, its all done and has her daughters name on it....
She opens the cake package and decides that the cake is underweight- I had weighed it after crumbcoating and it was about 1.6kg, before fondant and other decorations. Now, she changes her tune to: how we caretakers are fleecing people, blah blah. So I get pissed off and request him to deliver it at my brother's office which is in the neighbourhood.
Today I received feedback on how everyone at the office enjoyed every morsel of the 2.45 kg free cake that I sent their way...they took the liberty to weigh it....and got 2 orders for next month from his colleagues!

That's awful. I'm glad you got some orders out of it. I would have given new meaning to the term "smash cake" if I were dealing with a customer like that...!
Amy suspicion is that she didn't have the money to pay for It...as it was cash on delivery... Did I mention we do FREE DELIVERY?

If a check is cashed and in a bank account, can the customer still cancel the check?

Even though my mom hates to decorate cakes, she is helping me with my recipies and finding non processed foods to use. Gotta love moms!

As a bride I didn't have much of a clue what I wanted only....HARD (crack a tooth) royal icing, sharp edges and pillars in bright white, the decorator somewhat exasperatedly asked my colour scheme, to which I laughed, there wasn't one!!! Bridesmaids in lilac, men in silver and navy and the groom in gold and navy!....The decorator suggested some small lilac roses.
The end result was great....it was exactly what I wanted, even though I had no clue what I wanted!!!
A*check oops... Meant 'she' I typed the post from my phone and it has predictive text on..tends to think up words for me......! Must preview next time before I post.
And in my country, you can cancel a cheque if the bank has not cleared it..
Spireite, I know what you mean! A wedding planner friend of mine once explained her definition of a wedding cake professional vs. "a cake lady". She told me, "A true wedding cake person will know how to guide my brides through the design and decision process without making them feel stupid, and will do more than just ask 'What do you want?'." (She brought me a lot of her brides because, as she told me, she liked how I used humor to get them thru the process.) When given a choice between A or B, a bride/client should be able to pick one. When I had a really non-decisive bride, I would pick one for her and explain why I thought that might be best.
Fun times!!

I could never get my schedule arranged so that I could take Home Ec in school, which is probably best since I was already waaaayyy ahead of what they were learning to bake. And I gained a whole new respect for SAH moms when I became a mother. I always had to work and that was definitely the safest thing for my kiddos - funny, I had always believed I was a very patient person until they came along.
I'm curious if you will also be making the wedding cake as a paid for cake? If not doyou really want someone elses cake next to your cake? If the wedding cake is yucky people may think you made it too.
AI was a stay at home mom for my daughter for 2 years until she started kindergarten and had my son, who is 4. (I had him exactly 1 month after my daughter turned 5!) so, I have been a SAHM for 4 years and a WAHM for 2. I must say that I practically cling to other adults, and have had to set a timer that sounds like a phone so I don't talk my clients heads off! And now that the little one is 4 1/2 and going into preschool, I have been doubling up on birth control, and my husband is getting a vacectomy!
AI worked until my oldest was 6, which was when my youngest was born with some complications and I was no longer able to work. I haven't worked for 3 years now, it's impossible to maintain a career while having to take endless days off for medical appointments. I hope that I'll be able to get back to work when he starts kindergarten, but we'll see.
AAwww I hope he's ok, its so heartbreaking when they have to suffer at a young age : (

Hahahahaha! I always had something part time on the weekends when my husband was home with the kids, but even being at home all day with a baby and toddler made my brain start to melt. When you start trying to prolong conversations with any adult who's working the supermarket checkout just to have adult conversation you know you need to get out of the house more.
AUh.... You're not supposed to prolong conversations at the check out? Oops!
And I get dressed up to go to restaurant depot, it's in a bad part of down town, and all the guys who work there "appreciate" my ghetto booty, lol. I love the attention. I need it. Hahaha <---- manic laughing
Okay, not really, I don't have to dress up, and I don't need it, but I do get a lot of attention there :-)
AI'm going to start pressing my card into the checkout persons hand, and the people behind me at the store, and say "call me! Well talk more later!" Ooh! Ooh! I have a stamper with my business info on it, I will just stamp their hands! Bwahahaha!
