Hi Cat and everyone,
Just one cake for me this week , a two tier for a birthday with orchids and butterflies.
Brett, that sounds exhausting , I would love to do more than I do but my health doesn't allow it unfortunately .
Elcee, I love entering comps , I am already starting to think about what I will do next year and actually what I will do for the National conference in 2015, I have been told in no uncertain terms by the other decorators in my club that I WILL be entering.
Can't wait to see everyone's cakes . The penguins sound super cute.
Our cake decorating branch had its Christmas party today . It was great to sit and relax for a while and of course talk cake .
This week we have another shopping centre display, so I will be sitting in the Aircon , getting all my decorations done for all the CHristmas cakes I have sitting there looking naked at the moment.
Have a great week everyone.
Chelle
Here they are. Both of these were firsts in some manner.
The baby shower cake was my first time making gumpaste shoes.
The Christmas package was my first time covering a square cake in fondant. First time making a box and paneling. First time airbrushing with a stencil, (I'll stick to buttercream and royal with my stencils, much more defined look). I learned I can't cut straight or measure accurately and I need to let pearls dry a bit before trying to move them on the cake. Good learning experiences.

Beautiful cakes, tdovewings! I love it when you can learn something from what you're doing. I didn't check in to this discussion on Friday because I was running around like crazy trying to get the materials, ingredients and instruction sheets together for a gingerbread house course I was starting Saturday morning. Got over to the place and nobody showed up! Oh, well, I have everything I need for next year, when I will plan the advertising more carefully and give myself more lead time! I love baking and decorating, but I've got a WHOLE lot to learn about marketing! I guess my daughters, granddaughters and I will be making several gingerbread houses this week - can't let all that stuff go to waste!

They are gorgeous cakes...really love the baby cake too! The shoes are fun but it's an experience the first time. I have yet to make a cake where I haven't learned something new and I think that's the part that makes me like being a custom cake artist. I think if I worked in a shop doing the same type of cakes over and over again I'd go mad.

Marianna,
Next year make people pay the fee before the class in order to "book" their place in the class and most of everyone will show. It was a lesson I learned the same way you did<G>. I, too, spent part of my time today making a gingerbread house..or starting it anyways..we will add candy tomorrow after my son gets home from school.
Attached is my penguin cake! I had tons of fun making it and everyone adored it.

Great advice, catlharper and Godot, and it will be my policy from now on! This course kind of got set up on the spur of the moment and the woman who owns the studio where I would be giving it thought several of her students would be interested. Not so much, as it turns out, but now that I have the instructions, the patterns and the list of materials together, I'll start promoting it around the end of September next year and get at least 50% of everyone's non-refundable tuition up front. I appreciate your weighing in! Also, I LOVE penguin cakes, catlharper, and yours is faboo!
