First FBCT - smoothness problem

Hi there

 

I did my very first frozen buttercream transfer, and it didn't come out too bad for that, could have been better though. What I did after I made the minnie mouse, is I made a circle on my wax paper the size of the top of the cake, and iced over my design so that the whole thing would cover the top of the cake. Ok so the problem is:

1) When I iced over everything, I did go over it with my spatula to make it as flat as possible, but as you can see in the picture, it didn't work. Any tips on what I did wrong?

2) As you can see, when I placed it on the top of the cake, it was then way too thick and I had to do a border, which I wanted to do anyway, but if I wanted a smooth look and no border, how can I get that? Perhaps I should just ice over the image itself, and not create a whole "top" for the cake, if you know what I mean?

Isn't the image supposed to be flipped and placed with the flat side on the cake (meaning not the side you piped it on)? I think that's what makes the image flat and even.
 

Let them eat cake. I'd rather be decorating them anyway.

Yes, it was flipped. I piped using a mirror image print. The image itself was fine. Its the last bit I did over the whole thing (the pink part around the image).

Pearl123, that's a great idea to ice a circle the size of the top of your cake.  For it to be smooth, I think I would pipe the Minnie design, freeze it solid and then use a spatula to "ice" the rest of the circle, which will give you a smooth iced look instead of the piped lines.  It's easier to control how thick the icing is that way too and you can taper it to be thinner at the edges so it blends in with the rest of the icing on your cake better. HTH.

Thats a great idea - to taper it down at the ends! Thanks. Actually I think I did do my layer way too thick, being the first time, I was concerned if it was too thin that the wax paper would not peel off, but it came off so clean that I'll be confident to do it that way next time, Thanx!
