using a dummy as the bottom layer of a tiered cake (not stacked)

I am getting ready to do a 4 tier wedding cake that will have the separator columns between each layer, and not stacked.

 

The bottom tier is a dummy tier and columns will be put in that with the first real cake layer about it and so on. 

 

My question is will that bottom dummy tier be enought to support the rest of the cake above it? I don't want the cake to get top heavy from the separated tiers above it. 

 

any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.  My initial thought is to set the first tier of real cake on top of the dummy tier, then separate the rest of the tiers from there.....

lots of people viewing my question but no comments?? I was wondering if anyone had ever used the bottom tier of a cake as a dummy.... not a stacked cake though

I do it all the time for stacked cakes, but I've never done it for cakes using separators. I'd be a little worried about it being topheavy, too. I think your idea of stacking the next tier up from the dummy and then using the separators from there is a very good one. I've never used SPD, either, so I don't know if that would make for a more stable cake (I don't know exactly how they work). Hope you find someone who has more information on this.

Putting your cake on the styro to get more weight on the base makes sense and will be helpful, but how helpful that is depends upon how tall/thick the styro is. If you base styro is only 1 or 2 inches tall and fairly wide (like a 14" round or larger).......your plan should be fine. If your styro is 3 or more inches tall I'd definitely take further actions to stabilize your tall cake.

 

I'd try to glue down or screw down my base styrofoam onto some base like item to counter weigh the top layers. A heavy wooden cake board covered in foil or fondant would work. I might also counter sink a center dowel into the wooden base then skewer my styro on that and my base cake. Then I'd build up with a regular pillar system and feel confident.
