Modelling A Table & Chairs With Seated People?

Hi all!
It's been so long since I've been on the forums as I moved and haven't been able to do much caking recently... However I have a request for a cake... and wanted to model the couple sitting at a table playing cards.. Does anyone know how to do the table and chairs? And how to make them withstand having a model person sitting on the chairs?? Any and all tips gratefully received!

I'd make them really really well in advance out of Gum paste and give them ages to harden up so they don't bow or sag when you come to use them, At least two weeks IMO.
You'll also need to build long bamboo skewers into the legs of each chair and the table which you can cut to length after you've made the cake, the skewers need to go right through the cake to the cake board else adding the weight of figures will make the chairs slowly sink into you cake where the moisture will destroy them.
I've never made them that's just how I would go about it if I did :) pretty sure it would work through, design-wise I'd make all the uprights first and have the chair seats and table top as flat squares that would just rest on top of the legs, and the chair back would attach maiinly to the figure as that would be stronger than assembling a little chair then sitting your little dudes on it.
If you're short on time the table top is going to be tough, you could try speeding up drying; for me I find keeping all the pieces on a piece flat of foam, a fan blowing over and a lamp with a warm bulb- either a special heat lamp or a non-energy saving bulb works- but I'd worry about large pieces so make spares and have a backup plan like; bake a square sugar cookie and pop a square of fondant on top like a tablecloth, or use a cracker, or a bar of chocolate (yum!).......
