How do I add a message on this cake?

I was asked to make a cake like in this picture for a birthday party, and in addition, I need to add a message saying "happy birthday xxx". I was thinking to make a rectangular shape from white candy melt, and write on it using food marker, then have it sit on top. However when I tried, the food marker didn't write well on the candy clay. It appears the candy clay is too sticky. Any suggestions? Should I use fondant or gum paste instead? Or should I pipe using melted chocolate, which will be harder to do, I guess...

 

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you all in advance.

Did you put the candy melt in the freezer for a minute first? That might help.

I just left it room temp 'coz the instructions on Wilton site says to do so to let it set. But I will try that. Thanks.

Why not pipe the message on the side?  So that it doesn't compete with the spiderweb?

Write on a piece of fondant.  Glue the fondant to the melts.

I would either leave a little more space around the sides, so you're able to wring something in the front of the cake. A scroll is a great idea, too. Make a scroll, put it in the front of the cake, write on it. :) Good luck!

Thank you all! I now think I will put it in front of the cake, instead of sitting on the top, that's a great advice.
Gonna try to fridge or freeze the candy clay a little, to see if it becomes hard enough.
Last time I worked with candy melt, it just hardens at room temp. Doing exactly the same this time, don't know why it acts different.

If your food marker is a water based color it will not write well on modeling chocolate, regular chocolate or candy melts. You have to use an oil based color made for candy melts or chocolate. It may be easier, then to pipe your message with either melted chocolate or royal icing on the scroll or piece of gumpaste/modeling chocolate and place it on or in front of your cake as previously suggested. icon_smile.gif good luck!

jaja310, you are so right! After freezing my candy melt, I tried again. It worked better, but still not so good as I want. Then I figured out why, after a few strokes of writing, the marker got the oil from the chocolate so did not work well!
Now i'm gonna try using fondant, this time it should be better. Oh, I learn from trying, now I know better. Thanks to all!

I ended up doing a fondant plague and wrote a message on it with food marker, worked quite good.
