Writing on Cake

I'm needing to write a name on a cake. Someone suggested color-flo or piping gel. They suggest using these to copy the letters on to wax paper, then sticking on cake. The person wants special lettering. Which would be better? Also, where would I purchase color-flo?

I do anything to avoid writing directly on a cake. I have a hard time getting the letters straight and even. I have an edible image printer that I make plaques with quite frequently. Before I had that I would print off the computer the writing in the font and the size that I wanted. I would then mix up royal icing. Put wax paper over the lettering and trace. When it is dry you CAREFULLY place the letters on the cake. I would often make two or three sets to allow for breakage. There are also many cutters for letters. Hope that helps!

There are tutorials online about making letters, etc. I have tappits and cutters in a variety of sizes.  hth

I've also found that writing is best when "atrsy."  Lots of extra curls and dots and uneven letters - so that it looks purposeful.  Look at the Gigi and Curlz fonts.

 For my own part, I just initially make the frosting very stiff, too stiff to spread without shredding the top of the cake, then transfer a few tablespoons into a separate bowl, add the appropriate color, and load into a piping bag (in my case, a medium-to-freezer-weight 1-quart zip-top bag, with a piping adapter screwed into a cut-off corner). Then I thin the rest to a spreadable consistency.

Tappits for me as well.  I have about four different letter cutters in different fonts and sizes.
