How Do I stack cakes (newbie)

Ive read you use cake boards on stacked cakes. But im confused on how to go about doing that, finding the right cake board. I thought you always stacked cake on top of cake and used Dowel rods or something else. Im new to cakes & wanted to know how to stack in case i need to.

Each tier sits on it's own cardboard the same size as the cake.  You put dowels/bubble tea straws in all but the top tier.  So the cardboard is like a table top and the dowels are like the table legs.  So each tier is sitting on it's own table, rather than sitting directly on the tier below which would cause it to press down into the tier below and squish it.

Before stacking them you need to make sure they are level.  If your cake has a dome you will need to cut the top of it to level it out.  Some people use tools that will cut your cake in even slices.  Read everything there is to read about cakes and look at videos on you tube or on the internet.  Once leveled it takes a while to smooth out the butter cream but you can find videos on that also. Good luck!! You can do it!!!
