Square Cake with Frills Advice

Thread Starter

Hi,

I'm new to cake making and I'm looking for some advice for a cake I've been asked to make.  A friend has asked me to make a birthday cake for her granddaughter in a couple of weeks.  She wants a square cake with frills and dots around the sides.  I'm not sure how to do both without it looking too 'busy'.  Also, she wants a 20" x 20" cake and I've never done one that big before.  I'm just not sure what to do with decorating and I don't want to bother the family too much because the little girl's Mother died a few days ago.  I feel like the cake has to be extra special given that it's her first birthday without her Mum.

Any advice and help is welcome.

Thanks

There are a whole lot of videos on you tube of how to do anything and everything to do with decorating cakes, making frosting, I don't know about you, but I have better luck watching a video since they show you how to use the decorating tips. Go to you tube and type in cake decorating, icing flowers, icing roses, butter cream decorating, cupcake piping, smoothing cakes, how to use decorator bag and tips, etc.

You can learn to do it yourself very easily but it does take practice, practice and more practice.

Also here is a site called

http://seriouscakes.com/wordpress/?page_id=16

Look over to the right on her list and look at where it says videos. Click on them and her videos will pop up. Go down the list and watch all of her videos. She shows you step by step how to do just about anything. Between her site and many others you will learn much!!

Here is one more showing ruffles on a square cake

Good luck/ There are many great people on this site also that can help you when you need to ask questions!!/Mary
