Sheet Cake Ideas

I was asked to make a sheet birthday cake for both boys and girls.  I know I can make the generic buttercream party hats, balloons and presents, but I was wondering if anyone had any other creative ideas for decorations?

I most likely will be putting Barney somewhere on the cake, since it's primarily for a 2-year old, but I would like other options.

Sheet cakes aren't my favorite thing, but it was what was requested.

Go to wilton.com and click on "pattern locator" on left side.

 

You can search by theme, and there will be many patterns that you can fill in as you like. Buttercream transfers are the first thing that jumps to mind.

Check out Corrie Cakes on facebook. She has the cleverist sheet cake designs. I think she posts here too.
