First of all I am having a few problems with this new setup. How do u get to newest topics from all forums like before?

Anyhoo to my thread:

So someone calls me wanting a 1st birthday cake for her son and during our conversation we discover that we work for the same company but never met before. Got to look at her profile on facebook and realise I know her husband. I was even invited to their wedding but did not manage to attend. I found myself offering a discount as my present to birthday boy. Later on I was reflecting upon the amount of money I was going to pay for the edible image that she wants on the cake and wondering why I offered that discount out of nowhere. I will be doing baby figures as well. Thought to myself 'what was i thinking?'  I already have more orders than I can handle and I had no obligation nor reason whatsoever to offer that discount. Has anyone else done or said something lately that when you reflected upon you wondered what on earth came on you to say or do that?

Someone called a few weeks ago about wanting a cake. My head was somewhere else at the time. I asked what she wanted, and she said she wanted a 3 tier cake...and her budget was 1/2 of what I WOULD have charged. So what do I do? Tell her I can do it for that price!!  After I got off the phone it was like I woke up. I was like "WTH was I thinking?!" So when I didn't hear back from her for about a week, I figured she deiced to go another route, and I was happy about that! A few days later...she calls back and wants the cake. Heck I don't blame her! She got a deal! It turned out nice, and I didn't skimp out on any details because I my error in pricing. Next time I'll make sure my head is where it should be when pricing out a cake. :)

I thought they said we will be able to like others' posts with the new setup!

So true what you mentioned about how you must do your job well despite your mistake in pricing. Girl's  gotta do what she is gotta do and do it well.

That's so true. I gave her what she ordered (it's the pink cake on the pink tablecloth in my gallery)...and even ended up giving her a little more than she asked for. When I met up with her to get her payment and the invite that she wanted the cake to resemble, I found out that this was for a little girl's first birthday. So then I included a smash cake for her. I just used the domes that I cut off the other layers, cut them level, torted them and trimmed them to the size of smash cake I wanted. :)

I'm not in business...but I had a "what-was-I-thinking" moment recently having to do with decorating...

I made (fondant covered) onesie cookies (using the 3 impression mats, you know, sold as a kit on-line) for my sister to bring to work for a friend's shower.

I added vanilla bean paste to my fondant for the first time, instead of regular vanilla extract. I wanted them to taste extra good.

The thought occurred to me, that the black dots might show, but I really thought coloring the fondant (light blue & green) would cover it up.

Well it ended up looking like I had flicked dirt onto each cookie LOL!

I made my sis promise that she would explain to everyone what it was!

I can think of a couple:

One was the whole "wood type cookie" project. Doing 3 double-recipe batches and a single-recipe batch (after multiple test batches) of incredibly labor-intensive 2-layer painted shortbreads, and all without running tests on how to get baked-in cookie paint to look like process cyan and process magenta (process yellow is easy enough, given that egg yolk is already yellow).

The other was the small matter of my not using a perfectly good cake pan with a fitted plastic cover for my parents' 55th anniversary cake (the one with the edible image of a speed limit sign). And then watching the aluminum foil over the cake (because I used a regular 13x9 pan without a cover) rip up the edible image, all because my parents were making an entirely misplaced effort to save it for last. Yeef!

One of mine was my first castle cake. I thought it would take a couple of hours to decorate it. It was my first all-nighter cake.

Ugh.
