Ice Chest Grooms Cake

I am making an ice chest grooms cake with fish and cans of bud light inside and I hope some more experienced decorators can answer a few questions. The bottom half will be a cake dummy which I have never used before. Any tips or advice on getting that to work would be great. How do I get the fondant to stick to the styrofoam? I'm worried you will be able to tell where the cake and the dummy join together. Would it be better to try to use one big piece of fondant to cover the whole thing or panels around the sides with another piece on top?

 

I have worked out how to make the cans (rkt covered with fondant with a molded silver top) but I am still trying to get the label right. I was thinking of using a white sugar sheet to cut out the logo but I don't like how the letters stand out. Then I though it might be better to try to stencil it on but the color keeps running under the edges. Any tips on getting the bud light can color and making it look more like shiny metal? Thanks! I don't work with fondant much but I would ice the styrofoam with buttercream and then cover it with the fondant. It the buttercream dries to the touch before you add the fondant, spray it with some water or re-ice so it is sticky. How you apply the fondant will really depend on your design and how much space you have to roll it out.

 

I'm not sure what is running when you use your stencil. Can you attach a photo of the problem? Is the sugar sheet you are talking about the kind you use in a printer? It might work better to use a thin sheet of fondant or gumpaste instead. You can use a metallic or pearl dusting power to go over the can color and give it a simmer.

For the labels you could ask someone on ebay to print them for you on rice paper, it wouldn't cost you much. A few points to consider for your dummy, 1- make sure your cake has a cake board as someone might carry on slicing down and get a chunk of styrofoam 2- dont forget to attach the board to the foam with a little bc or ganache or it might slip and you'll get cracks in your fondant at the join 3- before covering in BC, ganache or fondant, wipe the dummy with a damp cloth and it will stick just fine, you can use tylose glue if you prefer. use very very little water/glue or your covering will just slip off 4- after placing your cake on top of the dummy shave it to match the dummy exactly then BC/ganache all together and you won't see the join. Thank you both for your suggestions. I think I've solved my stencil problem by not thinning my color and using a dry brush. And sticking my stencil down with a smear of crisco helped too. Yes I was using the sugar sheets. I tried thin fondant first but the dark blue was showing thru too much. I have some pearl dust so I will test how that looks on my progressively rough looking practice piece. lol

 

I considered the edible images but it was too costly with shipping added in. That would have been great though. I do have a board I am putting the cake on that I trimmed to exactly match the dummy size. Good tip about attaching it, thanks!

 

A new issue has come up this week. The styrofoam I am using for the bottom has a cutout on one end that I need to cover. I was thinking of covering that whole end with foamboard. Will the fondant stick to it the same as the styrofoam?

The ice chest is red velvet cake on the top half, the bottom half is a cake dummy. The fish is RKT covered with fondant and hand-painted. The beer cans are RKT covered with fondant. The labels are sugar sheets and the lids are molded fondant. The ice is rock candy.

 

Well there is a long and dramatic story about all the problems I had with this evil red velvet cake (which I may post in cake disasters later) but I think it turned out okay in the end. The groom was thrilled and tried to talk them out of cutting it! Lol I went with the sugarsheet cutout labels and used buttercream instead of fondant on the ice chest.

Rock candy. I mounded the icing a little and sprinkled a bag of the candy.
