Hi icon_smile.gif
I want to make buttercream for my cupcakes but the person I'm making them for cant have dairy so I've used soya butter. Is there anyway I can make buttercream? I'm probably bein a bit stupid here but I don't know if you can get soya unsalted butter? Any help would be greatly appreciated icon_smile.gif

The materials will have different names in different countries, but in general these are dairy free fats that will make decent buttercream-type icing:

white vegetable shortening (contains no water)
hi-ratio vegetable shortening (has some water)
dairy-free margarine (has more water than butter)
vegan margarine (has more water than butter)
coconut oil or coconut fat (has less water than butter)

I have noted water content because powdered sugar would be the same for a buttercream but the liquid added would have to be different.

Suitable dairy free liquids include soy "milk", almond "milk", coconut "milk"

"Dairy-free butter" can't technically be called butter, since it's not.

There are loads of different fats out there which are dairy-free - both shortenings and margarines.
