BIG NEWS!!! CakeCentral.com Major Upgrades 10/29/2012

Thread Starter
I am very VERY excited to announce some really big updates to CakeCentral.com coming on Monday 10/29/2012.
During the day Monday you may find that you are not able to login to the site at times, and at other times you may be able to access the site, but it may be in "read-only" mode, meaning you can access the articles, posts and gallery, but cannot post comments, questions, photos, or add/remove favorites etc.
Not to worry though! By the end of the day we will be live on a fully upgraded site.

We have partnered with a company called Huddler to bring a completely new foundation for the website. The staff at Huddler are experts in developing technology to support community based websites, and with their help we are able to provide a refreshed Cake Central, with all of the long standing bugs GONE, and a ton of new features available now or arriving soon.

Just to list a few of the amazing upgrades and new features:

Possibly the most requested new feature is the ability to "follow" or favorite other cake makers. Now you can? Is there a cake maker that you just love everytime they upload new photos, or post a new tutorial and don't want to miss it? Just click to "Follow" them and you will get email notifications when they post new content!

You can now see who has favorited your photos

New feature:
Product Reviews
Soon you'll be able to review your favorite (and least favorite) cake products, add pictures and details, and see what other users are saying about the same products.

Including where you can buy it and who has the lowest price!
And add any wanted products to your wishlist!

Will we be able to sort our favorites into folders/categories? Pleeeeeeeeeze.......

There. Their. They're not the same.

I hope I die before "your" becomes the official contraction of "you are."

Congrats Jackie and Heath on improving CC--it is appreciated.

I second Shanter's motion. I have never utilized the Favorites button because I have hundreds of photos and have them all categorized in my bookmark's section. It is very unwieldy and time consuming, but is much better than looking thru a thousand "favorites" to find my reference photos/tutorials on "peacocks", or "giant cupcake pan", etc.

I drag my fav pics to my desk top and put the name of the person who made the cake underneath the pic for reference and them put all in a folder. So would be great to organize into catergories

Hahahahaha! This will just give people something else to worry about...how many followers do I have? Did someone unfollow me? How do I get more followers? Blah blah blah... Remember that they might not be following you because they like you, they might be stalking you instead!

Will we be able to block people who we think are stalkers?

Does this mean we will finally have control over deleting our own photos?

I do have a real life stalker, who has disrupted my life and the lives of my children, It is dangerous and one of the things I liked about cake central was the fact that people couldnt follow me, like on twitter. This stalker has created phony profiles and caused serious trouble to my children and I, hacking accounts and even hacking into our computers.( spied on us for two years through our webcam without us even knowing, after a break up. ) That is why I asked. I know most people may benefit from the new changes, but personally, I will leave if I have to worry about that here. I liked not having to worry about it. But, I know my situation is unique. So, whatever. Please stop being rude. Maybe you dont mean to come off that way, but I have been offended several times over the last few days by your comments on my posts.

Totally did not mean to be rude, I actually think it's a good point. Sorry if you're offended but when I comment on something it's because I appreciate it. I've had someone on here who would follow me around from post to post and harass me...Not the same level of harassment you seem to have experienced, but I agree with you on the stalker thing. I will make a note of your username and never comment on anything you say from now on if that makes you feel better.

Congratulations and thank you! I look forward to the changes... as long as you guys do something about the ANNOYING ADVERTS that block half the page, I (and a host of others) will be happy.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "follow" feature if it just emails followers when you create a new post in the forums. If someone wanted to keep track of your CC posts it's pretty easy to do that today by clicking your profile, then the "X's Forum Posts" button.

That said, an "ignore" feature so you can automatically hide forum posts by someone you don't like (similar to how you can automatically block PMs now) would be useful. A similar feature for threads would help too, if someone is offended by the direction a particular thread has taken, they could just hide it instead of complaining about it.

Huddler is basically turnkey forum software, there's some configuration involved but you usually don't need custom development so I don't see why it wouldn't go live this coming week as planned. Personally I prefer the Fusetalk platform but Huddler has a pretty good interface, here is an example of another forum that runs Huddler:

EDIT: This forum might be more relevant to CC members as an example:
http://www.cheftalk.com/f/

IMO the bigger issue is that staff and moderators are not actively involved in the community, hopefully that will change once the new software is in place.

Out of curiosity, do you know if the Huddler program's review function act as an affiliate program type thing, where reviews link to product listings on Amazon etc and then the site gets a percentage of any sales that come from here?

I don't have direct experience with Huddler, but outbound links to retail stores (in the forums or reviews) are usually connected to affiliate programs whenever possible. This is a significant revenue stream for the forum operators so I doubt they would pass it up.
