Not sure if you are doing the full body characters or just the faces.  I found a jello madagascar mold at the grocery store in the jello section.  You could use it as a fondant mold for your faces.  I have not used mine yet.  I have entered a link below so you have an idea as to what it looks like.  Hope this helps.
