I have a Wilton Wonder Cake Mold I plan on using for my daughter's Monster High themed cake. I plan on using a full-sized doll for this cake but I am hoping I can save myself a little extra work in the decorating department. Anyone familiar with this pan knows that it generally comes with a slender tube put in the middle during the baking process, and the resulting hole is ideal for the Wilton doll picks. What I would like to know is what sort of tube material I could use to create a bigger sized hole during the baking process so that I can easily fit one of the Monster High dolls inside ... ? I'm trying to avoid the extra work of having to cut out a hole in the center for decorating.
The slender tube that comes with the pan serves as a heating core to ensure the cake's center bakes evenly with the outside. I suggest using this core when baking the cake then use a cookie press tube to punch out the size you need to fit the doll. Just be sure not to remove too much cake because it helps support the doll and prevents it from leaning. If you pre-wrap the doll's legs up to the butt, you can plunge it through the cake with only have to make a narrow hole at the cake top to make the hip area fit. This is what I have done when making a doll cake. HTH
Hey that's a great idea! I planned on wrapping the doll so that it wouldn't get all "gunky", but it didn't occur to me that I could just insert it without having to cut it first. That will save me some time and possibly a headache. Thanks
I agree that you can just stick it in, usually. The only other thing I'd think about is how tall the doll is, and whether the pan is tall enough. I've done cakes with a Barbie, and it's a little taller than the cake, especially since I can never get the Wonder Mold to cook all the way through properly if it's too full, without totally drying out the outer portion. Unless you can bend the doll's legs, I'd suggest putting the wonder mold on top of a 8" round, to get the extra height.
i agree with the prior advices; cook the normal way then dig a bit in the cake to fit the doll!
