Gold Icing

I need help with creating gold icing. Any suggestions?

whatsort of icing are you making. butter cream? this is what i found on the net. if its a small area that you are covering, you might be able to paint edible gold paint, once the icing is dried - thats the only thing i can think of

Gold - 10 parts Lemon Yellow & 3 parts Orange & 1 part Christmas Red

If it's piped RI or something then you can pipe in a yellowy colour and then paint over it with gold once it's dry.

If it's a large area you need to cover then you can buy PME gold lustre spray or Wilton gold spray (I prefer PME) which makes covering large areas easier. Again, if you start with a yellowy coloured fondant it looks good.

Gold buttercream - I have no idea. I have only ever managed to get a golden yellow buttercream. No clue if you can produce a metallic gold buttercream.

You will NOT get a "true"/metallic gold color onany icing and have it edible icon_sad.gif
Painting with highliter dust mixed with vodka (or similar) will give you that metallic color BUT..... .it is NOT EDIBLE! It must be done on a decoration that can be removed and not consumed.

........Gold - 10 parts Lemon Yellow & 3 parts Orange & 1 part Christmas Red........

This will give you a golden/yellow b'cream but it will not be a metallic gold.

try yellow, red and green, start with the yellow, add a couple drops of red, and then a drop of green, if your using buttercream, play with it with those colors and you will get a gold color, it will not be a metallic gold, but it will be a gold color. I have never tried it with fondant.

For buttercream, I use yellow icing and put in a small drop of brown, you will get gold but not metalic. Then I spray with pearl sheen or Americolor as a gold sheen that's looks better sprayed on gold buttercream. HTH

Hi kakeladi - I just checked my metallic silver PME lustre spray and it says it is edible food colouring to decorate and colour chooclate, sugar, cakes, biscuits, pralines etc....

I don't have the gold PME lustre spray to hand but would assume it is the same (checked the pearl, pink and glaze I have and they are the same). Is the PME spray different in the US? Are the UK ones different?

I also have Rainbow Dust's gold metallic food paint which is 100% edible. It is even kosher, halal, GM free, nut free, gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. icon_smile.gif

Am I missing something about these products??

I had not heard there was edible. The last I knew there was not any on the market that there was any that was edible......maybe it is new.

I don't think they are new, I just think that a lot of people were painting their cakes with highlighter (because it looks so cool) making it more of a "thing".

I use Luck's luster spray marketed for airbrush but it paints really nice, there are also a few maltodexterin based paints I use. The line is, creatively enough called "Glaze". They make "Gold Glaze", "Silver Glaze" and "Pearl Glaze". It looks great but I don't use it as much because they smell and tastes like mint. There's also "Touch of Gold" platinum dust which is FDA approved, and there is a whole hosts of edible glitters made from gum arabic - but I think they are new.

I'm sure there is more then that, it just happens to be the stuff I use on the regular.

My best results are gained by using edible gold leaf (23 karat). I also use pure silver leaf. There are photos in my CC album.
