You just have to be careful where you go, sometimes. There are a few trouble makers that make appearances on different sites to stir things up or make someone's life miserable. Hard to imagine that folks would behave that way when they are guests on these sites, but it happens just about everywhere!
Just wanted to warn you, I hate to see folks get hurt or upset. A lot of times there are really wonderful decorators on sites, folks we all can learn from. But it becomes a question of whether or not you can stomach the tangents and tantrums of the odd few.
There are game players everywhere, folks that are miserable and have to take it out on those around them. Imagine not having anything better to do than to be miserable to folks on a cake site, hard to believe, isn't it. I couldn't understand it at first and let it get to me. But you know, there are always petty, jealous, egotistical people out there who will make up stories and alter posts and play with people's words and they always manage to get a few others with the same kind of gang mentality, behind them. Reminds you of highschool girls. I can say that because I have yet to see any of the men on the sites behave in that manner. Fortunately, they are usually in the minority.
Haha, there, nobody can accuse me of naming any sites, this is just a "Proceed with Caution" warning.

squirrely cakes is right - Just remember if someone says (writes) something negative that is rude just ignore it. That person has nothing do to put to make other people feel awful. I was at a site and someone made a commet and hell broke loose. I have been going to that site for over 5 years and still do. Everyone is still fabulous Just keep really neagtive commets to yourself and ingore the people who say really bad neagtive commets.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy sweet dreams

well, i'm pretty new to this whole online community thing. I asked for advice because you could search for years if you looked at all the possiilities out there. I have been to a few sites mentioned here, but wanted to expand my horizions a bit.

Most of the sites give info, but don't seem to be a place to bounce ideas.

Heehee, thanks Liz.
I got so caught up in warning Mudpie, that I forgot to mention a smaller site that I have been on from the beginning. www.r-bdesigns.com
It is also a free site and very friendly.

Mudpie, a lot of the sites used to have forums or message boards such as this. Then there was a whole lotta fighting and several got rid of them. Some had to start charging membership fees because it is so expensive to maintain these sites, the amount of space they need etc.
Some of the on-line stores have forums also.

Have you tried www.wilton.com ? Of course it's not nearly as good as Cakecentral but worth looking at for information and ideas!

www.thatcakeboard.net is great too. There's a $10.00 annual fee though.

She gives you a 2 week free trial, and you don't need to give out your credit card number. It's about as good as this site is. Athough I like this better because it's free and it's cuter. : )

I met a couple of users from here at the Wilton site. The annyoing thing is that your posts are not posted right away and you have to wait for their approval before they appear on the board. It could take hours sometimes... And if you need assistance right away, then you are stuck!!!! icon_cool.gif

Honestly, I love CC and I haven't found any other sites that come even remotely close in my book. I do browse around other sites for pictures to get a few ideas sometimes. But none are as enjoyable for me as this one. This one is very well put together and very user-friendly. I just love it here.

Sorry, I thought when she was asking for sites like this one, she meant free sites. www.ladycakes.com has the annual user fee of $10 to cover the cost of the site, really reasonable and there are some wonderful decorators on the site . Victoria is a lovely lady.

I used to be on wilton's and once I came to CC I hardly ever go back.... this site is much more friendlier... I went to the wilton forum a couple of days ago and there was NOTHING about people who were affected by the Hurricane.... that's why I like this site way much better...
I'm sure squirrellycakes can agree with me on this...if you become mean and nasty and are one of those people that squirrellycakes warned you about...then don't expect to stay on this site too long... We have already had 1 person try to be mean and nasty and stir up trouble....and trust me she got kicked off the site never to be able to return again..

Actually I put a post on the Wilton site about raising funds for the hurricane, there were no responses. But I thought they were good to post it, I must say.
Hhmn, nasty people, haha, imagine that.
They obviously aren't getting their share of buttercream!

Well, I hope this doesn't create any ill-will but that site looks like it is related to that commercial enterprise, "Sell Cakes Like Crazy". There is no background on the site saying who owns it or why it was started up and since they mention a newsletter, I think that is who owns it.
That site was the subject of much argument and discussions on the Wilton site and other cake sites a few months ago. In fact, it got so out-of-hand that Wilton deleted all of the posts.
Anyway, bottom line, if it is connected to that site, which I think it is, it is a marketing tool for their product.

Just checked and yes it is linked to that venture. This is a commercial venture that sells marketing strategy tools for various businesses, not just cakes. They have marketing tapes or CD's and use a newsletter and now, this cake site, to promote their product and increase their clientelle.

I noticed a few posts by them here on CC actually...back close to the time when I joined. They always posted their link in their messages, but made it sound more like a personal or small business web page for a CAKE business, not a marketing ploy. I clicked on it, like I usually do everyone's links, thinking I would get to look at some pictures of cakes they'd done, etc. Nope! Just trying to get your money in what I think is a very sneaky way. Now...if they only offered material related to marketing just a cake business, and not lots of other businesses as well, then I might think better of it. But how can you claim to be an expert or have all the answers to how to make $$ at so many different types of businesses??!! People that do things like that just strike me as a little "snakey" icon_confused.gif

Well, some of us were introduced to this marketing scheme, through posts on the Wilton site and a group of us investigated. Not to say that it isn't perfectly legal, it is.
Rather than give any free advertisement or promotion here, I will send you some areas to investigate by a PM. If anyone else is interested, feel free to PM. me.
