I saw a method for homemade baking strips for your cake pans. A lady used a old hand towel got them wet then wrapped her cakes with them and then baked, turned out great. I've always wanted to try this since some baking strips can be pricey but haven't . Has anyone ever used a old hand towel? and did it work okay?

Do you put your pans on top of a cookie sheet so the strips don't touch the oven rack?

I don't, and have never had any problems not doing that. icon_smile.gif

I actually cut bath towels into long strips - probably about 4" wide. Then sew the edges with a stitch that will keep them from raveling. I keep large safety pins nearby when I need to use more than 1 strip. Then I soak the strips in water and squeeze out the water - but not too dry. Wrap them around the cake pan and tuck the end into the top. I have never had trouble with them burning. What I like is that I can throw them in the washer when they get dirty.

I also use strips of towels (with serged edges to prevent raveling) - have used them for over 20 years. I have hand towels for smaller pans and bath towels for larger ones. They do eventually break down from the heat, especially if you fold them in the same place every time, but they do not burn. And they can be washed.
