Number of servings from cakes

Hello! I am new here and also somewhat new to the cake decorating world. It's something I've loved for a long time, but just this year realized people will.pay me to bake for them! Woohoo!
Anywho, my question is about cake servings. I want to know from experienced people, if the charts you find online are acurate.
I have a baby shower cake coming up, and they are expecting 60 people. Would a two layer 6-inch on top of a three layer 8-inch cake be enough? Or should I fill in with some cupcakes?
I need some suggestions! Thank you!

The servings ALWAYS depend on how much other food is also being served. The Wilton chart says that at the top...

You should ask this when you take every cake order. If there is no other sweet food, then you will need more cake. The Wilton PARTY not wedding cake numbers are pretty close to the right amount in that case. Or else you count one cake mix per 12 people.

So call up the customer and ask--it's not too late.

I've always found the Wilton Wedding Charts to be very accurate - even for parties.

How many serving you get out of an 8" cake will depend on whether it is a round or square and if it is 4" or 2" tall.
It matters NOT whether it is for a b'day, shower, wedding or whatever event icon_smile.gif It's how its put together (1 layer or 2). You state you want to make a 3 layer cake. This will NOT effect the # of servings UNLESS you put a cake board between the layers and take the cake apart to cut into servings. If you do that then the 2 layer part will serve (as I remember) 25 while the separate 1 layer will serve 10-12. The 6" round should serve 8 or 10.
The best way to cut a round cake is to treat it as if it's a square icon_smile.gif Come in 2" from the edge and cut a whole/large slice - lay it down then cut that lg slice into 1" slices. Continue until the whole cake is served.
If it is a 2" tall/1 layer again treat is as a sq but after the lg piece is cut, the instead of 1" slices, cut it into 2" ones.
The only way BakingIrene's comment about other food/sweets being served really come into play here is that if there is lots of other food not as many people will eat dessert - it has nothing to do with how many servings one will be from a certain size of cake icon_smile.gif

Sorry if my wording was confusing. I was referring to the small vs large slice question. If no other dessert, then the large slices (Wilton party size) come out to the right amount by the time everybody gets as much as they want.

I used to work for somebody with an eating disorder--she had lots of parties with food, but she herself ate so little that we got her some childrens play dishes for "her" slice of cake...the men ate the rest of her share.
