Cake Decorating Classes

I have been thinking about offering some decorating classes at my cupcake shop. There has been some interest from customers, so I was wondering if anyone has tried teaching classes. How did it work for you? Any advice? The only classes around me are the Wilton Classes from craft stores. Which are fine, but i was just trying to add some variety.

I see that you also offer gluten-free and vegan products, you may want to look at creating specialty baking classes aimed at these niches in addition to the decorating classes.

I do Cupcake Classes on a monthly/seasonal basis. I limit it to 8 students & we usually make six different designs. Classes are 2 hours. I provide the baked cupcakes, icing & a box to take home their completed cupcakes. I also provide bags & tips to use and send them home with a sheet detailing which Tip #'s we used in each design. It's a big hit in my area & I always fill up as soon as a class is announced.I charge $35-$45 per person depending on designs.I also do a Mommy & Me cupcake class that is very popular and offer classes for groups such as Brownies, Girl Scouts, Youth Groups, etc. Hope this gives you a few ideas. I am sorry but I need to ask a question to jonitagordon... Jonitagordon in your decorating classes are the cupcakes already baked??? or do you do the baking, frosting making and fondant making also??

Sweet_Stuff_Cakery thank you for posting the question, this is something I have been thinking about also.

I do cc classes twice a year, usually April & October-November. I teach the baking (2 recipes) and decoration with fondant & buttercream. Its interactive, they help me with the preparation of the batter and buttercream and they decorate the cupcakes. Provide a booklet with:
The batter recipes made plus 2 more & the buttercream recipe. I use already made fondant ( didn't teach that).
List with names & photo of the equipment used;
List of Internet sites related with cupcakes & cookie baking;
List of the 3 stores closer which sells baking equipment and specify which is more/less expensive;
Provide packaging for the decorated cc's of each student;
Give a surprise to each of them at the end of the class (a tip used + a mini cookie cutter used with the fondant decoration. They love this part!!
The class is about 4 hrs. & I charge $45. HTH
I think in my gallery are photos of the cc made by the students.

I have everything done ahead of class, cupcakes bakes, icing colored & accents made, all tips we will be using in clear cups for each student. We discuss baking tips & icing recipes when we start, but my students (ages 4 to 80, so far!) seem more interested in using our time to learn decorating. I also print a booklet that shows each cupcake we will be doing, tips needed & a brief set of instructions. let me know if there are nay more questions icon_smile.gif

Soledad: Thank you for the info. I do not mind. You can pm when you want!!! Now, I remember your post regarding those cookies!!! Like you, I do prefer fondant decorated cookies, but admit that royal icing decorated cookies are more beautiful and cute than fondant ones. Look at your whale turn out very cute. I will have to "play" a lilltle bit more with royal icing.
