Fondant wrapped round cake

Hi, I've seen some lovely cakes on here (can't find them at the moment, though) with strips of fondant wrapped round the cake in layers.

I've tried a quick search for info on how to do them, but not come up with anything useful. Perhaps someone who has made one could answer a few questions, please?

Do you cover the whole cake with a layer of fondant first? Are the strips pure fondant or did you mix in gumpaste? How long would you say the ideal strip is? Did you need to support them in anyway until they dried?

I am hoping to make a cake for my children's teacher who is having a rough time at the moment, so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Lizzie

Do you mean the ruffly kind of strips, or stripes?

It you are talking about horizontal or vertical stripes visit jessicakes she has a tutorial on how she does it.

any time I have done stripes (vertical) I wrapped the cake in one layer of fondant. I usually just use fondant only, the gum paste isn't really needed since it doesn't need to dry quickly. Just attach to the cake with edible adhesive or clear vanilla. To get the length, measure up the side of your cake, multiply by two and add the diameter of the cake. In order to avoid a pile-up of intersecting stripes at the top, I usually cut them so they fit together and add another cake layer or cake topper. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your advice. I maybe wasn't clear enough in my description of the style, but I've found a picture:

Any advice on this technique?

Thanks,

Ah, I've just read the comments on the picture where the creator explains how they did it.

Thanks anyway!
