I'm making a buttercream covered cake for my hubby's b-day Sat. I want to wrap a ribbon around the base of it for the bottom border. I have the ribbon, and I read to iron wax paper onto the back to make it food safe, but how do I put it on the cake with some semblance of neatness? I imagine squishing the buttercream underneath so that there are bulges, having the ribbon not flat, etc. I'm sure practice and trial and error would be of great help, but I don't have much time for that before hubby's b-day. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

I've tried the wax paper thing, but I can't seem to get it to lay straight afterwards - it tends to want to curve. What I usually do is lightly coat the ribbon with shortening, so that it already has the grease on it, and it will be an even color on the cake. Make sure the cake is really chilled, then place the ribbon around, and secure with a dot of RI, and it should be fine. Good luck!
