Help! problem with Sugarshack's buttercream!

Hi,
So I made my first batch yesterday and it turned out perfect! I need red icing so today I added a full small container of Wilton's red color and now the icing feels and looks a bit grainy! This cake is not for a costumer, it is just to sing happy birthday to my 2 year old son, so I guess it is not the end of the world but I don't want it to look that way. I wanted to take pictures of the cake to put it on my facebook page but it is going to look terrible. How do I fix it? I want to add more powdered sugar but I am afraid of ruining it further. I did not sift my powdered sugar (I always sifted it with my previous recipe but didn't do it this time because the recipe didn't call for it) and I did use Hi-ratio shortening. ALso, I mixed it a lot to try to fix it but it isn't working. Please Help!

So much color changes the chemistry of the recipe. You may need to balance it by adding more sugar or liquid or fat depending on what kind of color you used. Also--what kind of liquid did you use to make the icing? Some colors are oil based and therefore do not mix well with water as they do with milk. I am no expert, but these are the ways I would try to fix it!

Good luck!

And happy birthday to your little man!

I always add my color to the shortening before adding the powdered sugar. This seems to help some so it doesn't get that grainy looking texture!
