I have this friend whom I don't get to see very often any more. She was my professor in college where I studied theatre. She has recently asked if I would donate a cake for a theatre in Atlanta that she now works for who is having a gala. Now--I am not a professional so it isn't like I could make money off putting my cards out or anything--but! A theatre! I selfishly hope that this would help me one day get back in the door (stay at home Mom) and onto the stage. Still. I am at the end of an ivf cycle in which I have sunk all my money and can't really afford to make, transport 45 minutes, and give away such a large cake. I love this woman and I want to help....but should I? Maybe a smaller cake and a bunch of simple cupcakes? I am so bad at saying "no, " especially to someone I know!

Depending on the law in your state, you may not be able to legally accept any compensation (even just for ingredients) if you do not bake out of a licensed and inspected commercial kitchen.
I think donating a smaller cake and some cupcakes is a good solution.

SO true! Also, no good deed goes unpunished.
Most importantly, IVF is demanding. I've lived it. It's also a great excuse. Tell her you are quite honored but the timing is just awful.

It's never "just cake!"
You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!
