What a cute cake! Im sure who ever made this just carved it in 6 pieces. Then covered it in fondant.
I can't help with that exact one but I made a similar one and would be glad to tell you how

When is the little one's actual b'day - when do you need it finished?
For the plaid, I would use a plaid stencil
culinarystencils.com
You simply place the stencil on the fondant and paint. First stencil is vertical, then horizontal. Of course you can do it with stripes you do by hand, but plaid looks much better done with a very crisp edge. Use coloring that is a bit diluted (not solid) It's the second stripe that makes the pattern come alive as it deepens where it covers the first set of stripes.
for the plaid - an edible image sugar sheet is easier
I must be out of the loop. I didn't know they made that. Great Idea.
Where do you get them?
I believe this is what you are looking for. The site has a number of different carved dog cakes.
