Cake decor class for girl scouts- would LOVE input!

Hi everyone! I've been asked to host/teach a cake decorating class a couple girl scout troops so they can earn a badge. They are kindergartners and 1st graders so I'm making it a cupcake decorating class to make it simpler. I'm pretty much a hobby baker and stay at home mom and would LOVE to do this, but have never taught cake decorating, besides to my own kids (5 & 7). I've seen the online Wilton "Icing Fun" program they have for kids- girl scout troops in particular even, but would love any input from any of you to help make this as successful as possible.

I would love for each little girl to be able to bring home 4 decorated cupcakes to show off and share with their family... as well as a few cake decorating necessities like tips, bags, coupler, and possibly spatula. Does anyone have any idea where I'd be able to buy these wholesale? I'd only need about 25, but beyond Amazon or Michael's for buying these supplies, I'm at a loss. TIA for any help! icon_smile.gif

Hi kiraboo,

I would suggess that you just get a box of disposable bags, and send a few home with each of them. Skip the couplers. I have a bunch of them and NEVER use them. You might try a restaurant supply store for tips and spatulas. I'd get each of them one star tip, and one small offset spatula. 1st graders are more about pretty colors and sprinkles than they are about fancy decorations.
One thing I did with a group of 9 year olds that they absolutely loved was to make up some candy clay in different colors for them to cut out flowers and hearts and stuff. They were so excited that they were all planning slumber parties to invite their friends over for a modeling chocolate party. thumbs_up.gif
I'm sure that whatever you come up with, they'll have a ton of fun!

I would do a demo on how to
-spread frosting with a plastic knife or spoon
-swirl with a piping bag
-cut out flowers or hearts out of fondant

Then give the kids a plastic knife or spoon to spread some frosting on two of the cupcakes.

I wouldn't give kids that age their own piping bag, I'd have a couple of big bags of frosting in different colours and you help them pipe a swirl on their other two cupcakes.

Then have a bunch of pre-made fondant hearts and flowers and different coloured sprinkles and let them go to town on their cupcakes.

If you want them to cut out their own fondant shapes, I'd have some fondant rolled out already and just get them to do some cutting. This will need one-one supervision.

Have you seen the Wilton Girl Scout Kit? Maybe each girl could buy her own.

If you are having the girls pipe, you could have the icing in plastic wrap and just drop it into the piping bags. It would save a lot of mess and clean-up. There was a tutorial for that on this site, but I couldn't find it to post a link.

Buy the packs of plastic tips that are sold for use with icing tubes. They do fine with disposable bags and the kids can use them until they are teenagers and can afford to buy metal tips.

Use plastic knives for spreading the icing.

Give the kids plenty of sprinkles to cover any spaces.

My kids often make the rainbow cupcakes on my profile (ages 5 and 9). You can give each child a small prefilled bag with the tip cut off (no need for metal or plastic tip since they just make small clouds. Then top them with rainbow colored belt candy bought at the dollar store (one bag bought for $1 will make 26 cupcakes!). No supplies required besides bags! If you wanted to use tips, have a few prefilled bags with tips that they could share and experiment with for the blue sky base. I'd love to hear what you decide and how it turns out. I may then decide to do it for my daughter's troop!
