Hi,

Does anyone know or where I can find the conversions from pounds to cups. For example, I thought 4 cups of powered sugar = 1 pound or 16 ozs., however, someone told me this is not true. Does anyone know? Thanks!

4 cups of powdered sugar is 1 lb. I stopped measuring my powdered sugar for my buttercream ever since I figured that out. It is not a pound if you sift it though!

It all depends on what you're measuring. For powdered sugar, a 2 lb bag will give you 7 to 8 cups, so 4 cups to a pound is pretty close. Liquids generally follow the rule "a pint is a pound the world around." Everything is different, though. I just went and bought a small scale for $6 at TJ Maxx. It goes up to 5 lbs and measures by the ounce. It was a bargain and I use it all the time.

Thank you both. I am in class and the recipe given calls for 5 1/2 pounds of powdered sugar and 1 pound of butter. I knew about the 4 cups = 1pound for sugar, but not sure about the butter. Thanks again!

Butter follows the liquid rule. 4 sticks(one package) of butter is a pound, or 2 cups.

Alimonkey...you are exactly right! A 2# pound of Domino's Powdered sugar is only 7-1/2 cups! I think the scale is the only way to go...wouldn't even bake w/o one! Crisco is another thing...it's messy and hard to accurately measure..but with a scale...I sit my mixing bowl on the scale, one cup of crisco is 6.8 oz , no mess and no guesswork!

I use it mostly for the powdered sugar, but I also make bread. With bread, the best way to get a consistent loaf is to weigh the ingredients instead of just using a measuring cup. I've also come across some recipe books that only give you weight measurements, so it has come in really handy!
