Alternating Square and Round Tiers

I am a self taught decorator who will be doing my very first wedding cake soon. My customer wants alternating tiers starting with a square cake. She has a rhinestone cake stand she wants to use that is "12 x 4". If I start with a 10" square, what should my other sizes be to make them fit? Also, when we discussed this order the bottom tier was to be 12' but I think it will look dumb on this stand she bought as it would be the same size. Any advise or suggestions greatly appreciated. So nervous over first wedding cake. One more thing. I usually use mmf but the last two times Ive had problems with taring and little crater looking things. Anyone know what's causing this?

P.S Cake needs to feed approximately 150 people.

Hate to break it to you but to feed 150 that cake size will not work. You will need to go bigger unless you do a sheet cake in the back or cupcakes to go with a smaller display cake. I wouldn't use a 12 in. tier on a 12 in. stand either. So she needs to either get a bigger stand or you will need to offer her the cupcake or sheet cake ideas. Once that is determined, then you can work on the design. Good luck!

Sometimes when I can not see how big the cake will be I stack my pans. Like two 10 inch square with two 8 inch round pans on top. Or whatever sizes you go with. It helps to see how big it will be. Good luck.

First of all, if you're starting with a 10" square as the bottom tier, it won't fit on her 12" stand (if it's round). A 10" square measures 14.14 inches diagonally, so it would need to be on at least a 15" stand or larger to avoid hanging off the stand.
Here are the right angle measurements for squares:

If you start with a 12" square on the bottom as a base tier, add a 10" round, a 7" square, and a 6" round, you'd get 146 industry standard servings...
