What is with some of these wedding coordinators icon_confused.gif I have had two brides that came for cake tastings, tasted my fondant which is very good I use the white chocolate recipe from Jennifer Dontz. The bride left the tasting satisfied with the fondant and the designs for their cakes which were fondant cakes. Then they talk to these wedding coordinators that didn't even come to the cake tasting and they are telling them don't get fondant on their cakes!!!! First of all the designs they chose looks better as fondant cakes. The brides were fine until they talked to these wedding coordinators. If they don't come with the brides to taste the cake then they should have no say so after the bride has chosen what she wants. Then the brides get all upset thinking they are not going to have a good cake.

This reminds me of a time I had a bride, on the advice of her florist, *insist* that their cake *HAD* to be covered in fondant just days before her big day! It was a Martha Steward tower of roses set up & florist insisted the cake would not remain standing unless it was done in fondant. Bride did not want and was i tears not knowing what to do.
I assured her b'cream would indeed hold up and of course
it did. Turns out florist also did cakes and was upset I got the order instead of her.
Just remember brides are under a lot of pressure with all the planning the must do and descissions they have to make. Some of them just 'crack' under the pressure.

Perhaps one afternoon in the 'off season', offer an open house and tasting for all the wedding coordinators in your area. It could be a really great networking opportunity to showcase your work as well as give them an opportunity to taste the fondant. Gives you an opportunity to explain how fondant can affect design too. Could be fun!

At the very least I would tell your brides that most people think they won't like fondant. But if she tasted it and liked it, her guests would probably like it too. Encourage her to have her wedding coordinator contact you so you can speak directly to her and explain how fondant works in the design process as well as taste! If the wedding coordinator is worth her salt, she'll want to do what's best for her customer and be open to her wishes.

Just some thoughts! Good luck! icon_smile.gif

That's why I tried to be as calm as possible because I know that the brides are under a lot of pressure at their last few weeks trying to get things together.

Carmijok I like the idea of doing an open house cake tasting I had been thinking about doing that in my area anyway!!! Thanks ladies for the replies!!!

Do you know this planner? If not, let me suggest it is a good idea to try to get to know the ones in your area. They can send you lots of business! Also, when something like this comes up, you can pick up the phone & tactfully tell her to mind her own #$*% business! Of course, you do that in the sweetest of ways.

Open house is a great suggestion. Also, to promote business, I would send emails to all the planners in your area asking a good time to bring a few samples. Gives you a great opportunity to put your cards in the hot little hands of people with influence.

I think education is a great idea, but I have to say that I find it disappointing that so many people have to get constant approval for every decision that they make--I mean, really icon_confused.gif

This namby-pamby way of living where every decision has to be made by committee is tiresome.

No one seems to know what they want, or what they like, unless they have the consensus of every family member, every bridal party member, heck, even the check-out girl at Wal-Mart!

I really like people who have the courage of their convictions--people who do some research, make a decision based on what they like, and move forward. Get the opinions BEFORE making the decision--not AFTER.

It's fine to listen to other people's opinions, but it doesn't mean that one should immediately change everything just to comply with those other ideas. It's also fine to say, "Thanks for your opinion, but I'd rather do it my way."
Of course, that also means if it's an epic fail, one has to accept that responsibility, too, but I've always said that I prefer to kick my own butt, rather than wanting to kick someone else's.....

You hit the issue on the head! Hard to stand with your gut when someone you trust is convincing you the cake will implode.

True, but if you've educated yourself FIRST--and have a backbone--it's easier!

You also have to be able to say you were wrong.............and very few people want to do that these days--they'd RATHER blame it on someone else...

Blakescakes I totally agree. On my website they have access to read my reviews from wedding wire, along with other testimonials of people who have had my cakes that had fondant on them if they are in doubt, so to take the word of a wedding consultant who has never had my cake over great reviews from other brides icon_confused.gif But I agree they need to be educated I live in a small town so they are still calling fondant, fundue lol!!!!! Most people here don't even know what fondant is and those that do know maybe had a bad experience with it and said it wasn't good.

I used to tell wedding planners that I was a professional in the cake business, having taken classes, making and decorating plenty of cakes, and even getting certificates, just like she or he had for their profession. That's why they were good in their professional field, and I was good in mine, and if a bride ever told me that their wedding planner told them not to get something in particular, I always told them that they should do what they (the bride) wanted, after all it was their special day, not the planners, moms, dads, or anyone elses. Always seemed to work for me.

Just my 2 cents.

Five months ago i had a bride do this due to her flamming WC icon_rolleyes.gif
So i phoned the WC and asked what was her experience was with making cakes and knowing the difference in Fondants.
Her reply - NONE.
So i *politely* told her - that unless she is going to go do a course in Fondant tasting then she would be well advised to keep her unfondant mouth shut.
The WC then went on to say that she *knows* Brides.
I said - i don't care who you know - and should you ever speak about cake ideas to another Bride that i am dealing with you will have more than fondant to worry about.

Then i asked - tell me please, what type of cake did you have at your wedding?
She said - i am not married....i don't like cake.....but i have been to many weddings.

I burst out laughing down the phone - and said ....i have been to many funerals - but that don't make me dead.
So in future don't speak cake to MY brides.
Instead - deal with the ribbon on the church pews.... icon_rolleyes.gif

The WC didn't refer me to the Bride - thank god - i didn't want to be associated with the likes of her. Some WC are more drama than they are worth - and occassionally place themselves very high above other vendors.

Don't allow it - phone her - ask her the reasoning and then *politely* let her know that when it comes to Cakes - you know best.and that you don't require her imput. She isn't doing you any favours by telling brides that about fondant..... so squash her interferring asap.

Yes, i say it as it is - i call a spade a shovel ever so *politely*

In the UK, "WC" used to stand for something that might be helpful to remember when dealing with this kind of WC.

I'm also on the PIPORG-L list server, and believe me, church organists have wedding coordinator horror stories too.

I think *Water Closet* is pretty much standard around the world....
House plans still refer to the smallest room in the house as the WC

Altho over here when speaking about Weddings - the Wedding Co-ordinator is referred to as the WC...
Lolll sometimes for good reason icon_wink.gif
