Im getting ready to start selling at farmers markets. I am going to do cupcakes, cookies, quick breads, etc. I also want to do pies because everyone keeps asking for them. Here is my problem, I don't know what pies I can sell. Nothing can be perishable of course, but what pies are perishable? I know/assume no pumpkin, sweet potatoe, anything with eggs. But what about fruit pies? Apple is really the one I want to sell. Can anyone help? Thanks!
Apple pies are great sellers this time of year. Also pear, or a mixed fruit pie with cranberries. Smaller pies sell better than the large ones. Make pie in sheet cake size and sell by the square - that's a great way to have people buy their samples. Next week they might buy a whole pie. I suggest, of course, that you also call your health inspector and ask what they allow.
Generally, most baked pies would be allowed as they do not require refrigeration. (i.e. apple pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie, etc). Pies with custard and or pudding type fillings are generally not allowed as they do require refrigeration. But check with your local health department as each state is different and even with in a state the rules can vary from county to county or even town to town. Good luck!
