Edible Image Cookies

Hi!

I am a newbie cookie lover (how did I only discover how awesome cookies are so recently?!) and my mind is racing with the endless possibilities.

I'm really keen to work with edible images on cookies. So for Christmas, I'm thinking of finding beautiful vintage images of Santa and using them to decorate my cookies.

My question is this: it seems almost impossible to do any of this in Australia without actually buying all of the equipment (printer, cartridges, paper, editing software), which is quite an expensive endeavour. There are a couple of businesses that will print out a customised sheet for you, but that's expensive as well. Do you think it's worth taking the plunge and buying the printer/accessories? Have any of you tried this? What have been your experiences?

No one seems to be doing this here in Sydney and I'd love to specialise in this. Any advice or opinions would be really welcome! icon_smile.gif

I am just starting to dabble in edible images because a friend who moved away gave me a bunch of the Kopykake frosting sheets. I am really not interested in investing in the printer, etc., so what I've been experimenting with is using rubber stamps that you ink with paste food color thinned with vodka. The way I've done it is to make a pad of paper towels (fold a couple so you have 8-10 layers thick), then wet with vodka and smear with the paste color until it soaks in. Then just press your stamp on the pad, and stamp on the frosting sheet. The image worked out great! You can also thin more color to paint/color in the stamped design.

The one thing I haven't done yet is actually apply them to cookies! The sheets I have are 2.13" circles, I'm going to do some round cookies and use them on there.

One thing I'm wondering is that I tasted the frosting sheet and IMO they don't taste very good. Wondering if they will blend in well to the icing and if that will mask the taste enough.
