I am making my own wedding cake in 2wks and I plan to make a 4 tiered dummy cake. I am going with a very fall theme so I plan on making alternating ivory fondant and chocolate brown fondant covered tiers. What I want to do is make a vine like pattern of colored leaves going around the tiers. I don't want to use cut-outs or sugar leaves, etc. So I am going to buy the fabric like leaves and dip them into color and then "stamp" them on the cake tiers.

So my question is what is the best type of liquid to use to create this effect? My first instinct is to buy the airbrush colors and use those. I could just use real craft paint since it is a dummy cake. My only concern with that is if someone saw it on my website and then wanted it duplicated on a real cake what would I do?

Sorry I'm rambling just trying to get things in order. Thanks for any help/suggesstions.

If there is an easier way I welcome those suggestions too.

I'd use regular gel food coloring thinned a little with some vodka or extract. I'd have a foam pad handy to stamp off excess before applying to the surface and I'd practice first. Bake a small cake and frost and then go to town. That way you'll know how it works so when you use your dummies and the question arises about producing the effect on real cake, you'll know.

Good luck. Make sure to post pics. And I think you are being smart by using dummy cakes

Wilton just started making cake "stamps" that actually have stamp pads, I am assuming with food coloring. I'm not sure if the colors will be right, though.
