Cake that holds shape well??? Fondant?

Hi!
I'm going to be making a cake for my husbands birthday. (shaped as an Xbox)
I want to make everything from scratch.
I'm thinking of a raspberry filling.
I was curious what's a (tasty) cake recipe would be that would carve into and hold shape good before I added the BC & fondant.
Also any tips/advice for fondant recipes & fondant making. I don't want to buy the premade kind. I am going to attempt the marshmallow fondant. Just not sure what recipe to follow either.
Thanks in advance!!

I like to do pound cakes when I carve and I love Nicholas Lodge s fondant recipe more than MMF. You can google: Nicholas Lodge s fondant recipe and voila.

I have used several scratch recipes for carved cakes, the WASC recipe, and even fluffy box mixes. As long as the cake is stacked and chilled overnight, it has never been a problem to carve.
