what do i charge for decorated cake dummies that someone wants to buy for display in their business??

You charge by the hour for the decorating work, and then for the materials that you used. Plus something more if it's your original design.

I wouldn't do it unless you were the decorator in their store. They'll be displaying your work that their decorator might not be capable of duplicating. It's best for them to pay their decorator to make the dummies so they can display the quality of the work they are producing.

thank you for the quick responses. i need to give them an answer soon. It is not in a bakery , so i don't have to worry about that. but thanks so much for thinking of that.

I just had a customer ask about adding a fake tier to her cake just so she can have a bigger cake then she needs but cut cost and I told her that they really don't cost that much less then a real cake. Cake dummies can be expensive and you still have to decorate them just like a real cake. The only thing you are cutting out is the time it takes to make the cake batter and bake it, which usually isn't that much time to make a big difference. Just calculate how much the cake dummies cost along with the other supplies you will need to decorate the dummies and add in your hourly wage for however many hours you think it will take. Just curious, if this is not for a bakery then why would a store want a fake cake as a display?

So agree with the cost analysis by Regina.

When a bride asks about "fake" tiers, I explain here isn't a big enough difference to justify. Not only is my cost not much less...but once you add additional delivery cost for the kitchen cakes, there is really no difference.

Bottom line, I charge $0.25 per slice less for cake dummies.

This situation is different. You won't need plates & columns. I would probably charge by cake not by slice. I would even work out something with them regarding publicity. Are they willing to add a small sign giving you credit? I can totally see a bridal boutique or florist requesting one. Could make for a great opportunity to get more business!
