Color mist??

Just wondering if anyone has used the Wilton or Duff brand color mist?
I have to do a wedding cake the end of Septmeber and they want snake skin print on the middle tier. I have found the stencil I want to use, but am contemplaing using the mist rather then royal icing. I have never used either. Just wondering what is better. Thanks!

I have used both Wilton & Duff brands. I hate them. Trying to use them is what finally pushed me to get an airbrush.

There is very little control of the spary. It basically comes out to fast & too strong. Forget any detail work.

Hm ... Okay. I dont really need detail, just bold green snakeskin print against light grey fondant. I would love to get an airbrush machine and do that but I dont have the funds at hand for it. Thank you. icon_smile.gif

I've used the Wilton mist sprays multiple times but only on masks (like for halloween) otherwise I don't think they are even enough.

Just remembered I've also used them very successfully on giant cup cake cakes to shade the roses different colours. Really beautiful.

I've used Duff's silver spray. It worked okay as long as you shake the can often and keep the can moving back and forth while you spray. I used short bursts of spray. If you hold still for more than a second or two, you'll have color running down!

Maybe hand paint over the stencil? or do the buttercream stencil?

Thanks for the input. I guess what I will ahve to do is just get the stencils and play around before attemping anything on the cake. icon_smile.gif

There was several demos on using stencils at the ICES convention in Reno recently. Everyone of these people recommended royal icing, buttercream icing, or thinned down fondant for stencil work. It was the general consensus of these people that air brushing and misting can be very frustrating. The people who had the Stencil booth had the same recommendations.

I have used stencils on several occasions but do not consider myself an expert, but I do agree with these people who are experts in this field.
