Hi: I am making a dairy free RKT figure to go with my son's b-day cake ( for his friend with severe allergies) I need something dairy- free to coat the RKT before putting on the fondant! I have tried just using piping gel, but it's still lumpy! I planned to use candy melts but found out they are not dairy free!.
TIA!

And here I was, all set to suggest candy melts...I didn't realize the weren't dairy free! Thanks for teaching me something new today!

Well I hope you didn't use any butter in the RKT...

You can make a stiff icing with just shortening and icing sugar. Use that on a hot spatula and it will give you a solid coat to fill the cracks. Use 1 cup shortening and as much of 4 cups powdered sugar as will mix in.

Thanks so much - I'll give that a go! His Dad said the store-bought ones were fine to use, so I used those and compressed into shape. icon_biggrin.gif

Yep shortening-based ABC or I prefer to just cover it with a pretty thick layer of fondant (just RKT and fondant) that will absorb the lumps.
