Cake Stands For Wedding Cakes?

For those out there that operate a small cake business from home, do you have cake stands that you have purchased or do you rent them?
I purchased mine. I have both an 18" round & square silver stand. I also have a bunch of smaller stands I have collected over the years.
I have an 18" silver plateau, but I don't use it much. I usually refer people to rental companies if they want a plateau, I don't want to deal with picking them up or chasing people down to bring it back to me.
I have purchased a 14 inch round silver stand and a 14 inch square. I had a wood stand made 16 inches. I cover it with fabric/ribbons to coordinate with the cake. Works well.

That really used to be a PAIN! I revised my Policies & Procedures Contract. Now, the bride is personally responsible for ensuring the stand is returned NO LATER than 12 pm the Wed. following her wedding. I even spell out that if she sends it with anyone else including the caterer she is the one ultimately responsible. I also write in RED BOLD "Cake stand must be returned by __________" on the cake contract. Since those changes, I have not had a problem.
I bought a ceramic cake stand from wildorchidquilts.net for less than $50 including S & H. They have many to choose from. I found them by accident. It seemed like such an unlikely place. I rent it out and ask for a refundable deposit if returned within 5 days.
I bought large silver round and square plateaus from Saveoncrafts.com . I'm always on the lookout for ceramic stands at HomeGoods and have amassed quite a collection.
This year with the increase in rustic chic weddings (burlap and mason jars everywhere) I had a neighbor cut three rounds of cedar about 12" in diameter and in various heights (5" to 8" tall). On them I put 16" pine rounds bought from Lowes. I stained and varnished the rounds in walnut, cedar and pale gray. They have been the stands of choice this summer.
I live in a small community where everyone knows each other so I can trust that they are returned promptly and I've never been disappointed. I include them in the cost of the wedding cake.
I have quite a few stands, round, square, gold and silver and all the wilton stands. I rent them out tp people who want to use one, but if i make the wedding cake the bride can use one for no charge, i just collect a refundable deposit. Never had a problem getting them back. Other bakeries in the area charge an extra $30-$50 if their bride uses one of their stands.
I do a lot of 6/10 combos and most of the time, due to the design, put my cake on a 14" drum. Hobby Lobby has a nice 14" silver round plateau in their wedding section...with my 40% off coupon I got it for 30ish dollars. That is a good inexpensive one to start out with.
AI am just starting out in the hobby. I have been decorating cakes for a local Dairy Queen. Soooooo, my question is, I know a local lady that is retiring from Her own cake business. She has a boat load of boards, and Wilton cake rounds as well as pillars for sale. Does anyone even use the pillars anymore? I personally don't like the looks of them and don't see many being used in the current cakes. Would they be a good investment for me or should I pass on them as an investment for a possible cake business in the future?

I get a request for pillars ever so often, but not many. I think I did 3 cakes last year using them, and one was for a vow renewal and they wanted to replicate their original wedding cake.
I have a whole collection of cake plates, stands, plateaus and cupcake trees that I have purchased and rent out. The plateaus were all bought from homesense at different times, and the cake stands are a mixture of antique stores and homesense. The cupcake trees I had made.
I require a deposit for each one, and they have 2 days to have them returned to me, they are $20 a day for each day late, until they either return it or the full deposit amount has been used.
I've never had anyone more than 1 day late.
AThanks so much for your reply. The retiring cake lady has several cake stands that she has included in the purchase as well as three fountains. The lot is mostly Wilton cake separators and pillars. I was interested purchasing her pans and cake but I figured that I would be stuck all the Wilton supplies. She is asking $500 for the entire lot so I know to duplicate it would be costly. I just didn't want to buy all the Wilton stuff that I had no way of moving. I looked on eBay and it seems that there is no movement there either. It's something to ponder. Thanks for all your help!
I have made a wedding cake for my cousin which is good combination of two popular cakes and frosting.There are two layers of golden butter cakes and one layer of chocolate cake between them filled with chocolate and vanilla cream.At the top there are dark and white chocolate curls.This cake has many things to enjoy with.
