When I do a wedding cake, I place it on a 3/4 in wood covered of course. with a deposit for return. I have been doing the same for birthday and baby shower cakes. but the boards rarely come back or they come back weeks later. what do you put your party cakes on to give to the customers?

For birthday cakes I use foam board (two layers taped and glued together then covered.) That way I'm not out a lot for expense and it doesn't matter if they return it.
Sometimes I glue together about three cardboard cake rounds together and cover those to make a board (depending on the weight).
If it's not too heavy of a cake I'll sometimes use those Wilton cake boards (purchased with a 40% off coupon at Michaels makes them cost effective - about $5.00 a board).
I only use wooden boards for wedding cakes.
That's just my two sense. Happy caking!

Can't be bothered with deposits and awaiting returns.
All of my decorative base boards are 1/2" foamcore covered with whatever coordinates well with the cake: fabric, scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper, or patterned Contact paper (all covered with clear Contact paper), or fondant.
I build it into the quote for the cake. I get 20x30 boards for about $4 each and even for large cakes, I get at least 2 boards out of it. I'd guess that even with specialty coverings, the average board runs me less than $8.
