Hi There,

I made a fondant cake yesterday and I need to keep it for 7 days before bringing it out at a party.
I made a choc mudcake and buttercream icing, and fondant on top. I have it secured in an airtight container under a bed, and it's winter here to it's not warm. Will the cake still be OK to eat in 7 days???

Thanks!

If this is a legitimate question (and I have my doubts) then why in God's name would you do a fully decorated cake 7 days before you need it and stash it under a bed? Mmmmmm....think I'll pass on this one.

lol this is a legitamate question!!

I have done this as it's a surprise for someone and I don't want them to see it - there is nowhere else to hide it.
So are you saying it WON'T last?

Haha this post was funny and I agree with you Carmijok...this doesn't make sense.
If this is legitimate I'm sorry but your logistics are odd. I don't think I would want to eat a cake that was under someone's bed for 7 days.

icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif never thought about hiding a cake under the bed LOL --- I've hidden cakes in my garage though, but never for 7 days. The earliest I've done/finish a cake is 1 day or 2 max...although, I'm no expert so maybe the experts can give you better advice.

So glad I'm not your friend. No way I'd eat an unrefrigerated 7 day old cake.

Thanks for the replies. Forget about under the bed bit, it's all sealed up in an airtight container, it's not in some squalid condition house - it's a spare bedroom, very clean and tidy! Anyway, I may bring it out earlier after reading the replies, and put in the fridge, thanks.

There is a website www.stilltasty.com that provides good guidelines for shelf life for a variety of foods. I use it all the time. They suggest that most cakes wil be okay for 1-2days in the pantry and 5-7days in the fridge. You might want to check this resource out for your specific type of cake. You may want to reconsider your storage option.

I personally wouldnt make a cake 7 days in advance and most certainly wouldnt want to eat a cake that was 7 days old...just my opinion.

However, since the cake is already made is there any chance you can freeze the entire thing and simply place in the fridge the night before to slowly thaw out? Keeping a cake in the fridge for that long you run the risk of the cake catching odors from leftover food and it can even get dried out.

I think the freezing is a good idea - I know I've read posts here about how to do that without ruining the fondant.

Instead of making fun of......maybe you guys could give some helpful advice so they know what to do for next time. Isnt that what we are all here for? "Just for laughs" is on a different channel.
For a cake to last 7 days you would definitely need to freeze it (well wrapped) and then let it thaw in the fridge the day before. To leave a cake out (non refrigerated) it will only last a couple days and even then its depending on whether you have used anything in your cake that requires refrigeration
