I received an email asking how much I would charge for cake decorations. The email said that the lady and her mother will be making the cake for the kid and wanted me to make a few butterflies and flowers to put on the cake. Since I've never been asked for a price on decor alone, I'm not sure how to price it. Does anyone have an idea about pricing? Thanks a bunch!

What I've gathered from old threads:
1. Charging by the hour + Materials (just like you normally charge for a cake but in this case it's a decoration).

2. Going online to sites like Etsy to see what others are charging for similar hand-made items.

3. Saying NO because most times people who do that are trying to save money and wouldn't want to pay what these decorations are worth. The argument being that the actual cake (before torting, filling, icing etc) is usually only a small fraction of a cake decorator's cost. Custom cakes are expensive not because of the 'cake' part but the 'custom' part.

I love looking up what things on Etsy costs. It's always eye opening for people to see. Especially the nicer gp flowers/hand mades.

How do you know what they are going to do with your decoartions? They say put them on a cake....
What if they re-sale them for more money?
What if they put them on another cake and sale it?
What if they put them on a copyrighted cake?
What if your decorations are beautiful and they go on a crap cake and the lady says oh Darthstefeny made it for us, do you want your name on there crap cake?
Just things to consider.
I dont sell my cakes but if I did it would be the whole cake or no cake.

That's Ron Ben Isreal's take on the issue. Once I read on his website FAQs that the only way to buy Ron's flowers is to buy them with the cake they come with. icon_lol.gif

Ok. Now I'm not sure if I do want to sell them decorations now. Its for a co-worker of my husband, that we do know well. But I see your point cakecarving, in saying they could re-sell or put it on a crap cake. I don't believe they would, but you never know. Thank you so much for your inputs, it makes me think of things I never would have thought before. icon_smile.gif
