Train Carved Cake Stacking

Hello all.

I am going to be making a Thomas a the Train cake for my sons birthday this weekend. I plan on following the directions on the free tutorial referenced on this website http://thomasthetankenginecake.blogspot.ca/. I have made the fondant features and the cake is now in the freezer. It is fairly level thanks to the wonderful advice here on using flower nails and bake even strips. I understand that I should keep the cake relatively frozen while I carve it. Should I chill the layers once they are stacked but before I start carving? Or should I stick a dowel in the cake to keep the layers from moving while I carve? I have never done a carved cake before and I am a little nervous about everything shifting as a I cut. Some additional guidance would be appreciated.

I think you will find the carving easier then you expect, the buttercream icing between layers holds it all together really well. good luck!!
