Tiered cake (non-wedding) transportation

I am delivering a 3 tier birthday cake tomorrow afternoon. What are your thoughts on transporting it? Should I assemble at home and place it in a large box with non skid foam or assemble it at the party? I have some piping to do on 2 of the tiers and I feel more comfortable doing it after assembly (and with no one watching me lol).
I've only transported a tiered cake one time and I was a nervous wreck the whole way there (this was before I knew to dowel the whole cake in the middle...oops).
Just thought I'd get some others' opinions, thanks! icon_smile.gif

A cake is a cake. Wedding, birthday, whatever.

Try to ask for a private place to do the piping at the party.

DEFINITELY stack onsite.

Get hold of some secondhand separator plates with feet underneath--use these to hold the tiers in your car. Use sheet pans with bubble wrap or towels on the flat hatch. Start with the cake dead cold out of the fridge for the easiest roadtrip.

I travel with my cakes stacked and basically finished--I don't like an audience, either icon_wink.gif

I put one, or 2 (if the top tier is 8" or larger), full length dowels thru the cake--nothing can "spin" on 2 dowels. I make sure that I have my other, tier high dowels in a pattern that allows for the full length ones easy clearance all the way thru the center of cake.

I place the cake in a box (sometimes only a few inches high) on a piece of no skid mat and then I place the box on top of at least 3 inches of memory foam. This greatly dampens the vibrations from the car & the road. I do it for every cake, even single layers.

If I have heavy items to go on the cake, I put those in place on site using what I've put into my repair kit--fondant, royal, buttercream, etc. I make sure that I have the supports already in the cake.

This wedding cake traveled over an hour in July, fully stacked. The lilies and topper were put on at the reception site. There was a central dowel, too:
