Hey All,
I am going to attempt to make legit gumpaste orchids this weekend and while I have used gumpaste lots of time I have never tried to make real looking flowers with it. Does anyone have any reccomendations on what kind I should use? The Wilton stuff always dries out on me too quickly and Duff's stuff is so spongy I feel like I can't form it quickly enough. I want to buy something I don't want to have to make it, I don't have the time.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!
I love Nick Lodge's recipe(google) and i love Wilton premade. I teach at Michaels with the Wilton premade and the students love it. They do great with it. hth good luck with your flowers. I can,t use Satin Ice. it stays moist too long for me. I can,t use Bakel, that also stays too moist and takes too long to dry. Maybe that is what you need until you get the hang of working with g/p. I actually was taught with Bakel. It does take longer to dry with it.
I use Satin Ice and haven't had any problems with it. It colors nicely, stretches out really thin and keeps the shapes of what I cut out. I think it dries nicely too.
I use the Wilton but always mix in some fondant (homemade marshmallow fondant). That is how I make all my flowers.
......just can't make it, I don't have time. Maybe I'll just get the Wilton again.....
In the time it takes to go to the store and buy some you CAN make Nic Lodge's recipe It is very, very easy. Just make some royal icing and add Tylose powder....how simple is that?
Hahah YEAHHHH! But then I have to CLEAN all that stuff! Mostly I am just too lazy. I ended up using duffs gumpaste. They came out okay (didn't post photos) but I found that my real problem was the wiring. I need to take the Wilton Class 4 program but my Michaels people don't really seem to have their act together!
I use Satin Ice, too. I only had an issue the first time I used it because I was use to working with my own.
Now, I love it!
I use Nick Lodge's gum paste or Diane Gruenberg's Platinum paste. The platinum paste is amazing. I can't believe how thin you can roll it.
I vote for Nicholas Lodge's gum paste recipe. I find it dries the fastest out of all. Satin Ice gum paste is too fragile and soft for me and takes too long to dry.
I make my own - Rosemary Watson's recipe - takes no more than 5 minutes then you simply soak the bowl and it washes like a dream. The more time you put into each flower, the better it ends up looking.
You need YouTube, you can find all sorts of tutorials on gumpaste flowers, and how to wire them, worked great for me. Just put in how to make gumpaste flowers, and voila!!!
