And then agree to take on another request? icon_biggrin.gif I have a full time job with a hellish commute and a family that requires two different dinners every night (I know, I know. Don't get me started.). There's really no time for caking and everytime I'm up at 11:30 p.m. on a weekday making a cake I say "I think I'm done with cakes after this one." But then someone asks me to make a cake and I'm just so darned flattered being a newbie that they actually want me to make their cake that I agree.

The last one I did was a week ago and it was a three teired wedding reception cake for a couple who eloped earlier this year. The transport alone was enough to rattle me (crazy pop up storm with hail and high winds, branches flying by as I carried the cake to the car, torrential rains, all 28 traffic lights OUT, electric lines down in the street and trees crushing cars). I firmly proclaimed that I was DONE with cakes for awhile. And yet someone asks me tonight to do a cake and I'm all like "Sure! Love to! And how about I do a really super time consuming rainbow layer in each of the tiers. And I'll deliver it the day I leave for vacation since I'll be gone the day of the party."

We are nuts, are we not? icon_cry.gif

Well if you get licensed for a home (cottage law) bakery, then you can say:

"SURE I'll drive through three feet of water--for a $100 surcharge"..

"SURE you can have a bending rainbow in each tier--for $200 extra".

"SURE you can have a cake on two days notice--at a 100% overtime surcharge"

And please read the other postings with "burnout" in the title and avoid that like HIV.

OK so I'm sitting here having solved a longterm chemical cooking problem...I think. I will know for sure on Tuesday. Baking cakes was a whole lot easier.

in ohio you don't have to be liscense unless you make stuff that spoils like cheesecake and the like.. I feel you been there. In fact i am at that place now with wedding cakes. Turned down one this year. But your family needs to be more supportive. Two different dinners? I once knew a lady that had to do the same thing. . My hat is off to you.

I only do cakes for friends and family now and I do them as my gift to them for their event as well as for the opportunity to practice. Thank goodness I'm not good enough to get myself into the snare of determining a fair price for "real" customers based on circumstances and desires. I'm clearly not ready for that! I'm very impressed with those of you who run the business and creative sides of caking.

I am from Ohio and there is a cottage law that says you can bake and sell from your home as long as it is like for example cheesecakes, or has to be refridgerated. If you do these, you need to get a liscense.

I can't believe you delivered a cake it that! I'm from Ohio too and I left work late that Friday and walked out into tornado weather! The rain was blowing sideways, the wind was like 85 miles per hour, and hail was pelting me!! And my friend rode her motorcycle to work and wouldn't leave it so I helped her move it to the lee of our building so it wouldn't blow over, all the while we were getting drenched! It was crazy weather!! I'm still in awe that you delivered a cake in that!!! Kudos to you!!
