Anybody else notice alot of 'extras' in sugar lately?

I usually use Dominoes pure cane sugar, but lately, especially from my supplier, but even from the local Rest. Depot, that there has been a lot of particles in my sugar lately. I now have to spend extra time sifting the sugar to get them out. The 50lb bags from my supplier has been so bad that I had to stop using them for a while and switch to the 50 lb from RD. But they are still there.

Anyone else noticing this?

I think it may just be Domino's. They used that brand at the bakery I worked for and it would sometimes be incredibly gritty. They would end up using that icing for piped decor and such. I use C&H and the one problem I had with them is they used too much cornstarch in one batch and it made my icing almost tasteless. It's only happened once (knock wood).
You might call or write the manufacturer and tell them the lot number. I think they should replace your sugar if it's that bad!

If I am ever on life support, unplug me...

Then plug me back in.  See if that works!

I have seen it in the big bags of Domino's, not the small. I have also seen it in off brands. I only use Domino's but my husband picks up anything off the shelf for his coffee.

I sift everything so it isn't a bother for me. For superfine sugar that I can't get anyway, I keep a 4 lb bag of Dominos for this. The grain is good in these bags.

This is one of those quality issues I write about when people try to make a good product from off brands. In the end, the result will not be the same for even a gourmet recipe. It is too bad that Dominos puts its seconds in the bulk bags, but I guess corners have to be cut in the food industry because consumers don't like price increases.

I recorded the lot numbers, and the times of purchases - and it was at least a few months in between, but my lot in January was so bad - I sent it back to my supplier. That one was obviously more than just light brown specks. It had obvious effects from a rodent issue in the packaging facility.

It just threw me for a loop when months later I get another bag from RD with the same problem. And yes, I tried switching to the RD brand, but the product quality isn't the same, so I prefer to stick with Dominoes. I am not too far from the Baltimore, MD processing plant, so I am very curious to see if this problem extends beyond my local area.

btrcktch, we may have the same plant. Mine are definitely crystals, some brown, most white. Because of the brown, I even have to sift when making candy, a process that melts even the clumps, but who wants brown spots.

But again, no issue with the little bags.

I actually noticed it with the Dominos granulated 4 or 5 lb bag from the grocery store last month.
