Hi, I have to make a corn on the cob including leaves to put on top of a small cake (I have no idea why they want it...its a gift to a couple who are getting married so it must be an in joke amongst them all!). Anyway the corn should be around 10cm long. How would you do the kernels? Individual little bits of gumpaste? Royal Icing? I've got the internal log shape and leaves covered, I'm just unsure what would make the kernels realistic...although I think I know you are all going to say to roll them individually
Hey there,
use jelly beans(jelly Belly makes ones that are perfect). It looks best with two to three colors in the same family. Google corn on the cob cupcakes and you will see what i am talking about.
Just pipe them with buttercream with a tip #4 or #5 the same way you'd pipe a bead border. It's quick and easy... should take less than a minute to pipe about 10 beads per row.
These are all great ideas....you also might try covering the corn with a thick piece of yellow fondant. Then with a tool, imprint each kernel of corn in rows up and down the length of the corn. Then go back with some dusting powder and dust some of the kernels slightly darker in your yellow color. I am not sure what tool you could use to do this, maybe a large hole decorating tip. Good Luck!
The ONLY good use I have found for this tool is doing corn kernels
Use the rounded 'bead' type of roller and make strips that go up your ear of corn

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll have to try some of them out and see what works best. I saw pics of cakes with the jelly beans but for the size of the corn they would be too big, it only has to be 4" long. I think I might go either the piping route, or somehow mark the kernels in a piece of yellow gumpaste and dust the edges. I have that useless Wilton tool, I'll check out the piece that ApplegumPam suggested to see what it does.
